Strong Winds, Afternoon Thunderstorm Risk and Near 90°F Heat Expected Across New Jersey Today

Severe weather is expected to impact New Jersey on Thursday as a mix of high temperatures, strong winds, and afternoon thunderstorms moves across the state. Weather officials warn that conditions could become unstable later in the day, especially during the afternoon and early evening hours.

Forecasters report that the day begins with warm and breezy conditions, with temperatures climbing into the upper 80s and reaching around 90°F in several areas. Along with the heat, a strong southwesterly wind is expected to develop, producing gusts between 30 to 40 mph across much of the state. These windy conditions may continue through the afternoon before storm activity increases.

The National Weather Service has placed the entire state under a slight risk level for severe weather, meaning isolated but potentially strong storms are possible. A cold front moving toward the region is expected to trigger scattered thunderstorms between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. Some of these storms may develop quickly and bring brief but intense weather impacts.

Meteorologists caution that the main concern with today’s storm activity is damaging wind gusts. While not every area will experience severe conditions, any storm that forms could produce sudden strong winds capable of causing minor property damage and travel disruptions. AccuWeather forecasters also suggest that isolated storms may reach even stronger gust levels, potentially between 60 to 70 mph in the most intense cells.

Ahead of the storms, the combination of heat and humidity will make conditions feel hotter than the actual temperature, with heat index values rising into the mid to upper 90s in some locations. This may increase discomfort for people spending time outdoors, especially during peak afternoon hours.

At the Jersey Shore, coastal conditions are also affected, with a high risk of rip currents expected due to strong onshore winds. Beachgoers are advised to remain cautious in the water as currents may become dangerous throughout the day.

Conditions are expected to improve by Friday as the cold front moves out of the region. Winds will weaken slightly, and temperatures will remain warm but more stable, with highs in the 80s. The risk of rip currents will also decrease to a moderate level along coastal areas.

Looking ahead to the weekend, forecasters are expecting mostly dry and sunny weather across New Jersey. Temperatures will stay in the 80s, and while Saturday may still bring occasional breezes, Sunday is expected to be calmer overall. However, weather models indicate another system could bring rain and thunderstorms back into the region by Monday, although the exact timing and strength remain uncertain at this stage.

Residents are advised to stay updated with local weather alerts as conditions may change quickly during the afternoon storm window.
