New Jersey Storms Dump More Than 3 Inches of Rain in Some Areas, Triggering Flash Flooding Across Multiple Counties

New Jersey experienced another round of heavy rain and thunderstorms on Wednesday, bringing intense downpours to several parts of the state and causing flash flooding in some communities. The storms arrived just days after another wet weather system affected the region, leaving already saturated ground unable to absorb additional rainfall.

The heaviest rain fell during the afternoon and evening hours, with some locations receiving between 1 and 2 inches of rain in less than an hour. As the storms continued moving across the state, rainfall totals climbed even higher in several towns. Roads, intersections, and low-lying areas quickly became flooded, creating difficult travel conditions for drivers during the evening commute.

According to rainfall observations collected from official weather monitoring stations and trained volunteer weather observers, Manchester in Ocean County recorded the highest rainfall total in the state, with 3.08 inches. That made it the hardest-hit location during Wednesday’s storms.

Several other communities also reported significant rainfall. Mine Hill in Morris County received 2.71 inches, while nearby Rockaway measured 2.54 inches. Cinnaminson in Burlington County recorded 2.06 inches, and Clark in Union County finished with 2.05 inches. These communities were among the areas that experienced the most intense rainfall during the storm system.

Weather experts noted that although the storms were scattered, they produced very heavy rainfall over short periods of time. This type of weather increases the risk of flash flooding because drainage systems often cannot handle large amounts of water falling so quickly. Drivers were urged to avoid flooded roads and never attempt to drive through standing water, as conditions can change rapidly.

Rainfall reports from across New Jersey showed that many other communities also received more than an inch of rain. In Burlington County, Mansfield measured 1.76 inches, while Burlington and Willingboro each recorded 1.03 inches. Westampton received just under one inch, with 0.94 inches.

Camden County also experienced steady rainfall, with Cherry Hill reporting 1.05 inches and Camden receiving 0.86 inches. In Cape May County, Cape May Point measured 0.79 inches.

Hunterdon County saw widespread rainfall as well. Readington recorded 1.44 inches, Lambertville measured 1.32 inches, and Stockton received 1.05 inches.

In Mercer County, Ewing reported 1.25 inches of rainfall, while Trenton measured 1.03 inches. Woodsville recorded 0.81 inches during the same storm system.

Communities across Middlesex County also experienced heavy rain. Woodbridge received 2.03 inches, placing it among the higher totals statewide, while Metuchen measured 1.73 inches.

Monmouth County recorded lighter but still meaningful rainfall totals. Freehold received 0.90 inches, while Howell and Upper Freehold each reported approximately 0.85 inches.

Morris County remained one of the hardest-hit regions, with Mine Hill and Rockaway both exceeding 2.5 inches of rainfall. Ocean County also experienced widespread precipitation beyond Manchester’s state-leading total. Beach Haven recorded 1.19 inches, and Jackson measured 1.08 inches.

Elsewhere, Pennsville in Salem County received 1.16 inches of rain. Millstone in Somerset County reported 1.77 inches, while Union County saw Clark receive just over 2 inches and Linden measure 1.60 inches.

The repeated rounds of rain this week have increased concerns about localised flooding, especially in areas that have already experienced heavy precipitation. Saturated soil means even moderate rainfall can quickly lead to standing water and rising streams. Weather officials continue to encourage residents to stay alert for changing conditions whenever thunderstorms are in the forecast.

Forecasts indicate that New Jersey could continue experiencing warm, humid weather along with additional chances for showers and thunderstorms over the coming days. While not every community will see heavy rainfall, isolated storms may once again produce brief periods of intense rain capable of causing localised flooding.

Residents are encouraged to monitor weather forecasts, remain aware of any flood advisories or warnings, and use extra caution when travelling during periods of heavy rain. Even short-lived thunderstorms can create dangerous road conditions when rainfall rates become intense.
