New Jersey High School Track Coach Arrested After Student Reports Alleged Sexual Relationship
A track coach at a New Jersey high school has been arrested after authorities accused him of sexually assaulting a student over a period of several months, according to prosecutors.
The accused, 26-year-old Joel Deanley Jr. of Gloucester Township, is facing multiple felony charges following an investigation led by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office. Officials announced that he has been charged with three counts of second-degree sexual assault and three counts of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child.
Investigators say the case began earlier this week when a female student came forward and reported that she had been involved in sexual activity with Deanley. Law enforcement officials launched an investigation into the allegations and later concluded that the alleged encounters took place on several occasions between June and August.
Authorities identified Deanley as an employee of Timber Creek High School, located in the Sicklerville section of Winslow Township. In addition to working as a school aide, he served in several coaching roles within the school’s athletic programme. According to prosecutors, he was the head coach for both the boys’ and girls’ winter track teams while also assisting with the football programme and the girls’ spring track team.
Officials have not released the student’s age in order to protect her identity. Prosecutors said the student is currently believed to be the only known victim connected to the investigation. However, investigators are continuing to review the case and have encouraged anyone with relevant information to contact authorities.
The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office said Deanley was taken into custody on Wednesday. He remains held at the Camden County Jail while awaiting a detention hearing, where a judge will determine whether he will remain in custody as the criminal case moves forward.
Cases involving allegations of sexual misconduct by school employees are treated with particular seriousness because educators and coaches are entrusted with the safety and well-being of students. New Jersey law strictly prohibits sexual relationships between school staff and students, and authorities investigate such allegations through specialised units that handle crimes involving minors.
Law enforcement officials emphasised that the criminal charges are allegations at this stage of the legal process. As with all criminal defendants in the United States, Deanley is presumed innocent unless and until the allegations are proven beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
School districts are generally expected to cooperate fully with criminal investigations involving employees.
