ESPN’s Annual ‘The Ocho’ Event Returns With Four Days of Unusual Sports and Fan-Favorite Competitions

Sports fans looking for something beyond traditional football, basketball, and baseball have plenty to enjoy this week as ESPN brings back its annual “The Ocho” programming event. Running from August 6 through August 9, the special broadcast celebrates some of the world’s most unusual, entertaining, and unconventional sporting competitions, offering viewers nearly 75 hours of unique events.
Inspired by the fictional television network featured in the 2004 comedy film Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, ESPN first introduced “The Ocho” as a one-day programming stunt in 2017. The idea quickly became a fan favourite, eventually growing into a multi-day television event that now attracts viewers interested in everything from quirky competitions to emerging sports that rarely receive national television coverage.
This year’s edition is the biggest yet, featuring dozens of competitions from across the United States and around the world. The programming highlights sports that are often overlooked by mainstream television but have dedicated communities of athletes and passionate fans.
The event officially begins with Red Bull Spin Off: DC, where two-person teams build customised bicycles and race across a floating obstacle course. The competition combines creativity, engineering, and athletic skill as participants attempt to reach the finish line without falling into the water.
Opening day also includes several entertaining contests that have become favourites among viewers. Dinosaur costume enthusiasts will once again compete in the T-Rex World Championship Races, while the Meadowlands Racetrack Wiener Dog Derby showcases dachshunds racing down the track in front of cheering crowds. Another returning attraction is the Great Bahamian Crab Races, an event that highlights one of the more unusual forms of organised competition featured during the broadcast.
Unlike traditional sports programming, “The Ocho” is designed to introduce audiences to competitions they may never have seen before. Many of these events have established championships and governing organisations but receive little national exposure outside of this annual television showcase.
One of the biggest attractions this year is the addition of 23 competitions making their first appearance during ESPN’s annual event. These include Combat Archery All Stars, the ISSA Housekeeping Games, Fire Department Racing, Death Diving League, Paddle Smash World Championship, Hacky Sack Championship, and several Red Bull competitions known for combining athletic performance with entertainment.
Another anticipated newcomer is Bare Knuckle Fighting Ice Wars, which blends combat sports with an ice-based competition format, offering one of the weekend’s most talked-about events.
Viewers can also expect competitions featuring motorcycle challenges, blaster tag tournaments, goalie-only hockey games, pumpkin tossing contests, foosball championships, and other unconventional sports that rarely appear on national television.
One event expected to draw significant attention is the Microsoft Excel World Championship Finals. While spreadsheet competitions may seem unusual to casual viewers, the championship has gained worldwide popularity in recent years by testing participants’ advanced spreadsheet skills under timed conditions. The competition demonstrates how strategy, speed, and technical knowledge can transform office software into a competitive spectator event.
Traditional athletic contests also remain part of the lineup. Fans will be able to watch kickball tournaments, paintball championships, world-class axe and knife throwing, broom hockey, and ultimate championships throughout the four-day schedule.
Dodgeball continues to play an important role in “The Ocho” because of its connection to the event’s origin. This year’s schedule includes the USA vs. Canada Dodgeball Showcase, giving fans an opportunity to watch elite players compete in one of the sports that inspired ESPN’s annual celebration.
The television lineup also features multiple airings of the classic comedy film Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, paying tribute to the movie that originally imagined ESPN8 as a fictional network dedicated to broadcasting unusual sports.
Baseball entertainment fans are also included in this year’s programming through two nationally televised games featuring the Savannah Bananas and the Loco Beach Coconuts. Known for blending baseball with comedy, music, and fan interaction, the Savannah Bananas have become one of the fastest-growing entertainment brands in sports, making their appearance a natural fit for the event.
The schedule stretches across all four days, with programming beginning early in the morning and continuing late into the night. Competitions range from highly organised international championships to community-based events that celebrate creativity and fun alongside athletic ability.
The continued growth of “The Ocho” reflects changing viewer interests across the sports industry. Fans increasingly seek fresh content that offers entertainment beyond traditional professional leagues. By showcasing niche competitions and introducing audiences to lesser-known sports, ESPN has successfully created a programming event that attracts both casual viewers and dedicated sports enthusiasts.
Many of the featured competitions have experienced increased visibility after appearing on “The Ocho” in previous years. Television exposure has helped several organisations expand their audiences, attract sponsors, and introduce new participants to their respective sports.
For viewers interested in watching the event, ESPN’s special programming is available across its television and digital platforms. Fans with participating television providers can also stream many of the competitions through ESPN’s digital services, while select streaming providers continue to offer access through eligible subscription packages and promotional trials.
As the event celebrates another successful year, “The Ocho” continues to demonstrate that competitive sports come in many forms. Whether it is racing dogs, throwing pumpkins, mastering spreadsheets, or competing in dodgeball, the annual showcase highlights the creativity, passion, and diversity that exist throughout the world of sports.
