Trump Approval Rating Drops to New Second-Term Low as Poll Shows Shifting Voter Mood
President Donald Trump’s approval rating has reached its lowest point so far in his second term, according to a newly released national NBC News poll. The results highlight growing public dissatisfaction and suggest potential political challenges ahead for Republicans as the country moves closer to the upcoming midterm elections.
The poll indicates that Trump holds a 42% approval rating among registered voters, while 57% say they disapprove of his performance in office. This marks a noticeable decline compared to earlier surveys and signals increasing concern among voters about his leadership direction during his current term.
The findings also suggest that this decline in approval is not happening in isolation. The survey shows broader political implications, especially for the Republican Party, which could face difficulties maintaining control in Congress if current voter sentiment continues.
According to the poll, Democrats currently hold a 5-point lead in voter preference for controlling Congress. About 49% of respondents said they would prefer Democratic control, while 44% supported Republican control. A small portion of voters, around 7%, remain undecided, reflecting a segment of the electorate that could still influence future outcomes.
Independent voters appear to be a key factor in this shift. The survey shows that independents favor Democrats by a 12-point margin, with 46% supporting a Democratic majority in Congress compared to 34% who prefer Republican control. This group is often considered critical in determining election results, especially in closely contested races.
The poll also highlights differences across demographic groups. Democrats showed stronger support among Black and Latino voters, younger voters under the age of 50, and those with a college education. On the other hand, Republicans performed better among men, white voters, and individuals without a college degree.
These divides reflect a broader political landscape in which voter preferences are increasingly shaped by education, age, and racial demographics, adding complexity to the electoral outlook for both parties.
The NBC News poll was conducted with input from 2,400 registered voters between May 29 and June 7. It carries a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points. The survey was sponsored by More Perfect, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization.
As the political climate continues to evolve, these results suggest that voter sentiment remains highly dynamic. With midterm elections approaching, both parties are expected to closely monitor shifts in approval ratings and public opinion trends that could ultimately shape control of Congress.
