Eagles Could Expand Tank Bigsby’s Role in 2026 After Strong Training Camp Start

The Philadelphia Eagles appear to have found another valuable weapon in their backfield, and early signs from training camp suggest Tank Bigsby could play a much larger role during the 2026 NFL season. While much of the attention has been focused on how the Eagles’ revamped rushing attack could help star running back Saquon Barkley return to top form, Bigsby has quietly emerged as one of the most impressive players on the practice field.

Through the opening days of training camp, Bigsby has consistently made an impact with his speed, vision, and ability to create explosive plays. Coaches have also given him opportunities to work alongside the first-team offence, an indication that the Eagles are looking closely at ways to involve him more frequently this season.

Although Barkley remains the clear starter and one of the league’s premier running backs, Philadelphia’s coaching staff appears determined to build a more balanced rushing attack. Giving Bigsby additional opportunities could not only strengthen the offence but also help manage Barkley’s workload throughout the long NFL season.

Bigsby joined the Eagles after arriving from the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2025 season. Like many players adjusting to a new team, he needed time to settle into the offence. Once he became more comfortable, however, he showed flashes of the talent that made him a highly regarded draft prospect.

Despite receiving limited carries, Bigsby produced efficiently whenever his number was called. He finished the 2025 season with 356 rushing yards on 63 attempts, averaging an impressive 5.7 yards per carry. Those numbers become even more encouraging when excluding the regular-season finale, where many backups received extended playing time. In meaningful situations throughout the season, Bigsby averaged nearly six yards every time he carried the football.

His production suggests he deserves a larger share of offensive snaps moving forward.

One of the biggest reasons for optimism is how naturally Bigsby fits into Philadelphia’s updated offensive approach. The Eagles are expected to lean more heavily on an outside-zone running system, which rewards runners who make quick decisions, accelerate through open lanes, and gain extra yards after contact.

Bigsby possesses many of those qualities. He attacks running lanes decisively, runs with power, and has enough burst to turn small openings into significant gains. His combination of strength and athleticism makes him difficult for defenders to bring down once he reaches the second level of the defence.

Training camp has already provided several examples of those strengths. During recent practices, Bigsby broke free for multiple long runs that reached the end zone. While training camp sessions without full contact cannot perfectly predict regular-season performance, explosive plays still demonstrate his vision, acceleration, and confidence within the new offensive scheme.

Another encouraging development has been his work as a receiver out of the backfield. Bigsby has looked comfortable catching passes during drills, giving Philadelphia another option in both the running and passing game. Modern NFL offences increasingly rely on running backs who can contribute in multiple ways, and Bigsby’s versatility could help expand his role beyond traditional rushing situations.

For the Eagles, increasing Bigsby’s workload also makes practical sense. Barkley remains one of the offence’s most important players, but reducing unnecessary wear and tear over a 17-game regular season could help keep him healthier for critical late-season games and the playoffs.

Philadelphia has several ways to accomplish that. The coaching staff could rotate Bigsby into more early-down situations, use two-running-back formations that feature both Barkley and Bigsby on the field together, or simply provide Barkley with more opportunities to rest during games without sacrificing production.

Depth at running back has become increasingly important across the NFL, especially for teams with championship aspirations. Injuries, long schedules, and physical playoff games require multiple dependable contributors rather than relying on one player for every important carry.

If Bigsby continues building on his strong training camp performance, he could become one of the Eagles’ most valuable complementary players in 2026. His efficiency, physical running style, and fit within the team’s offensive system give Philadelphia another dimension that opponents must prepare for every week.

Training camp performances do not guarantee regular-season success, but they often reveal how coaches envision their roster. Based on the opportunities Bigsby has already received and the confidence he has displayed, the Eagles appear ready to trust him with greater responsibility.

As the preseason progresses, all eyes will remain on how Philadelphia distributes snaps in the backfield. If current trends continue, Tank Bigsby may no longer be viewed simply as a backup. Instead, he could become an important part of one of the NFL’s most dynamic rushing attacks and a key contributor to the Eagles’ plans for the 2026 season.
