Newark Elementary School Security Guard Arrested After Alleged Online Child Luring Investigation
A 34-year-old security guard employed at an elementary school in Newark has been arrested after authorities said he allegedly tried to arrange a meeting with someone he believed was a 13-year-old girl.
According to police, Jeffrey B. Sanders Jr. was taken into custody on July 16 in North Bergen following an investigation that began after law enforcement received information from an individual who operates a YouTube channel dedicated to exposing suspected online child predators.
Police said the individual contacted officers after communicating with Sanders online and provided investigators with chat records. Authorities allege the conversations contained sexually explicit messages exchanged with a person Sanders believed was a 13-year-old girl.
After reviewing the information, North Bergen police responded to an apartment complex where Sanders was arrested. During the investigation, police said Sanders admitted to sending sexually explicit photos and videos and taking part in sexually explicit conversations with the person he believed to be a minor.
As a result of the investigation, Sanders has been charged with luring a child, attempted sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child. The charges remain allegations, and the case will proceed through the legal process.
Court records do not list an attorney representing Sanders at this time.
The case has also drawn attention because Sanders worked as a security guard at an elementary school in Newark. A spokesperson for Newark Public Schools did not confirm whether Sanders has been suspended or dismissed from his position.
In a statement, district spokesperson Paul Brubaker said the safety and well-being of students remain the district’s highest priority. He added that the school district continues to take all necessary measures to maintain safe and supportive learning environments across its schools and educational programmes.
The investigation remains active, and North Bergen police are asking anyone with information that may assist investigators to come forward. Authorities are also accepting anonymous tips as the case continues.
