New Jersey Mother’s Day Weekend Weather Brings Rainy Saturday Before Warm Sunshine Returns Sunday

New Jersey residents can expect a changing weather pattern heading into Mother’s Day weekend, with periods of rain, some sunshine, and temperatures warming significantly by Sunday. Forecasts show a mix of cooler conditions to start the weekend before warmer air pushes temperatures close to 80 degrees in parts of the state by Mother’s Day.
Lingering showers across southern parts of New Jersey are expected to gradually move out by Thursday afternoon. As skies begin clearing across much of the state, temperatures are forecast to remain mostly in the 60s with a blend of clouds and sunshine creating mild spring conditions.
Forecasters say Thursday night could bring a slight chance of light showers mainly for areas north of the Interstate 78 corridor, though rainfall amounts are expected to remain limited and spotty.
Friday is shaping up to be one of the calmer days of the weekend weather pattern. Partly sunny skies are expected statewide, with dry conditions and afternoon temperatures again staying in the 60s. The pleasant weather could provide a brief break before wetter conditions return over the weekend.
Rain is expected to become more widespread early Saturday morning and continue through much of the afternoon and evening. Weather officials are also monitoring the possibility of a few thunderstorms developing ahead of an approaching cold front. At this time, severe weather is not expected to become widespread, but isolated stronger storms cannot be completely ruled out.
Saturday is also expected to turn breezy as the storm system moves through the region. Wind gusts could approach 25 miles per hour in some areas, adding to the unsettled conditions during the day.
Conditions are forecast to improve significantly by Sunday as warmer air arrives across New Jersey. Mother’s Day is expected to feature more sunshine and noticeably higher temperatures, with many areas climbing into the upper 70s. Some locations could even briefly touch the 80-degree mark during the afternoon.
Most of Sunday is currently expected to stay dry, giving families an opportunity to enjoy outdoor Mother’s Day plans. However, weather models indicate that another cold front could approach later in the day, bringing an increasing chance of showers by late afternoon and evening.
The unsettled pattern may continue into the start of next week. Widespread rain and a few thunderstorms are forecast to develop Sunday night into Monday morning before the storm system moves offshore later Monday. Cooler air is then expected to return to the region as the new workweek begins.
The upcoming weekend forecast highlights the typical spring weather swings New Jersey often experiences during May, with rapid changes between cooler rain-filled days and warm sunshine within a short period of time. Residents planning outdoor events for Mother’s Day weekend are advised to stay updated on local forecasts, especially for Saturday’s rain and any possible thunderstorms.
