New Jersey Grandfather Dies in Early Morning Collision on I-287 Ramp in New York State

A New Jersey grandfather lost his life early Sunday morning following a two-vehicle crash on a highway ramp connecting Interstate 287 and Interstate 87 in New York State, according to authorities.

The incident took place at around 1:19 a.m. when a minivan was stopped in a dangerous position, partially blocking both the center shoulder and part of the travel lane on the ramp leading from northbound Interstate 287 to Interstate 87. Authorities said the positioning of the vehicle created a hazardous situation for oncoming traffic during the early morning hours.

A Mini Cooper traveling on the same ramp collided with the rear of the stationary minivan. The impact caused severe injuries to the driver of the Mini Cooper, identified as Guido R. De Castro, a 64-year-old resident from the Hewitt section of West Milford, New Jersey. He was transported to a nearby hospital but later died due to the injuries sustained in the crash.

Inside the minivan were a 40-year-old woman from Hackensack and a 13-year-old boy. Both were taken to a hospital for treatment. Authorities confirmed that their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The crash occurred in Hillburn, located just north of the New Jersey–New York border, an area where major highway routes frequently connect and traffic flow can become complex, especially during nighttime hours. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that an investigation into the exact cause of the crash is currently ongoing.

According to information shared through a GoFundMe page created in his memory, De Castro is survived by his wife, four children, and three grandchildren. The page reflects the loss felt by his family and community following the sudden tragedy.

New York State Police continue to review all circumstances surrounding the crash. Officials have also asked that anyone with relevant information come forward to assist with the investigation.
