Yankees Broadcaster Michael Kay Rejects Idea of Moving Austin Wells to DH During Offensive Struggles
The New York Yankees are dealing with growing pressure as their recent slump continues, and catcher Austin Wells has become one of the biggest talking points surrounding the team’s offensive struggles. While some fans believe a position change could help Wells regain confidence at the plate, longtime Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay strongly pushed back against that idea during a recent discussion on “The Michael Kay Show.”
A caller on the program suggested that the Yankees should temporarily move Wells into the designated hitter role to reduce the physical stress that comes with catching every day. The idea was that focusing only on hitting might help the young catcher improve at the plate during a difficult stretch.
Kay immediately dismissed the suggestion and argued that Wells’ biggest value to the Yankees comes from his defensive work behind the plate. According to Kay, taking him away from catching would remove the strongest part of his game while not guaranteeing any improvement offensively.
Wells has struggled badly at the plate in recent games, managing only three hits in his last 36 at-bats. His recent production has become a concern for Yankees fans as the team tries to stay competitive in the American League East race. Despite the offensive slump, Kay emphasized that Wells still provides major value through game-calling and defensive leadership.
Kay also referenced comments from former Yankees manager and catcher Joe Girardi during the discussion. Girardi reportedly explained that modern catching techniques, particularly catching on one knee, reduce the physical strain on a catcher’s legs far more than in previous eras. Kay used that point to argue that fatigue should not be treated as the primary reason for Wells’ offensive issues.
The Yankees’ current position in the standings makes every lineup decision more important. The team is already trailing the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays, and the pressure to win games continues to increase as the season moves forward. Kay stressed that the Yankees cannot afford experiments that could weaken multiple areas of the roster at the same time.
Another concern raised during the discussion involved the backup catching situation. If Wells were moved into the DH role, backup catcher JC Escarra would likely need to take over behind the plate more regularly. Escarra has struggled offensively this season, and Kay argued that such a move would only create another weakness in the lineup instead of solving the original problem.
The debate around Wells highlights the larger challenges currently facing the Yankees offense. Fans are searching for solutions as the team looks to recover from a difficult stretch, but the organization also has to balance offensive production with defensive stability. For now, Kay believes the Yankees are better off keeping Wells in the role where he contributes the most rather than making a major adjustment during an important point in the season.
Although frustration continues to grow among fans, the Yankees still appear focused on trusting Wells as their primary catcher while hoping his offensive numbers improve naturally over time. The organization understands the long-term importance of his development, especially because of his defensive ability and his role in managing the pitching staff.
