Whole Foods Minestrone Soup Recall Issued Across 17 States Over Undeclared Shellfish Risk

A recall has been issued for a popular Whole Foods Market-branded soup after officials discovered that some containers may contain shrimp that was not listed on the product label. The recall affects 24-ounce cups of Minestrone Soup produced by Kettle Cuisine of Lynn, Massachusetts.
According to information released by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the issue poses a potentially serious health risk for people who are allergic to shrimp or shellfish. Health experts warn that consuming undeclared shellfish can trigger severe allergic reactions, including life-threatening complications in sensitive individuals.
The company said the recall began after one container found in a store was discovered to contain shrimp despite the ingredient not appearing on the packaging label. At this time, no illnesses or allergic reactions linked to the recalled soup have been reported.
The recalled product is sold under the Whole Foods Market label and comes in a 24-ounce cup. Consumers can identify the affected soup by checking the lot code 1762181 and the use-by date of May 27, 2026, which are printed on the top rim of the container. The product also carries UPC code 099482502065 on the back label.
The recalled soup was sold online and at Whole Foods Market locations nationwide, including stores in Alabama, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Food recalls involving allergens are treated seriously because undeclared ingredients are one of the leading causes of emergency food allergy reactions in the United States. Even a small amount of shellfish can cause dangerous symptoms for people with allergies, including difficulty breathing, swelling, hives, nausea, and in severe cases, anaphylaxis.
Customers who purchased the recalled soup are being advised not to consume it if they have a shellfish allergy. The product can be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Kettle Cuisine said consumers with questions about the recall may contact the company during regular business hours. The recall remains ongoing as the company and federal food safety officials continue monitoring the situation.
The incident highlights the importance of accurate food labeling, especially for products that may affect consumers with serious allergies. Federal food safety regulations require companies to clearly disclose major allergens on packaging to help shoppers make safe purchasing decisions.
