Trump Says Reflecting Pool Damage Will Be Repaired After Reports of Peeling Coating and Alleged Vandalism

President Donald Trump has pledged to quickly repair the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool after reports emerged that parts of its recently installed blue coating were peeling away only weeks after a costly renovation project was completed.

The issue gained national attention after photos and videos circulating on social media showed algae growth in the water and visible signs of deterioration on the pool’s surface. The renovation project, which reportedly cost approximately $14 million, had recently been completed as part of broader restoration efforts.

Responding to the criticism, Trump said the damage was not the result of construction problems but was instead caused by vandalism. In a statement posted on Truth Social on Sunday, he said he had personally inspected the Reflecting Pool and described the damage as serious. Trump stated that repair work would begin immediately and vowed to restore the landmark.

According to Trump, officials will move quickly to address the damage and return the Reflecting Pool to its renovated condition. He strongly criticized those he believes were responsible and said the site would be repaired as soon as possible.

The following day, Trump expanded on his claims, alleging that the Reflecting Pool had suffered a significant gash stretching hundreds of feet and that chemicals had been illegally introduced into the water. He also pointed to damage on a nearby grass field at the National Mall, where markings appeared in the lawn displaying the numbers “86 47.”

Trump suggested that the markings and damage were connected to broader acts of vandalism targeting federal property. He further claimed that the incident may have been influenced by former FBI Director James Comey, though he did not provide evidence to support the allegation.

The president emphasized that federal laws provide substantial penalties for the destruction or attempted destruction of public monuments, fountains, and similar government property. He stated that such laws would be fully enforced in response to any confirmed acts of vandalism.

The controversy has also drawn attention because of recent arrests connected to activity around the Reflecting Pool. According to reports, authorities arrested David Hearn, a three-time Olympian, after he reached into the pool and touched an area where the coating was peeling.

Hearn denied any wrongdoing and said he did not damage the structure. He stated that he neither destroyed nor removed any material from the pool and said he was surprised when he was taken into custody.

Trump later announced that additional individuals had also been arrested in connection with what he described as vandalism of the Reflecting Pool. He again alleged that corrosive chemicals had been placed in the water, although he did not provide evidence publicly supporting that claim.

Despite the controversy surrounding the project, Trump defended the renovation effort and said the Reflecting Pool had recently reached what he considered its most attractive condition since its opening in 1922. He praised the restoration work and expressed confidence that repairs would restore the site to the same standard.

The Reflecting Pool remains one of Washington’s most recognizable landmarks and attracts millions of visitors each year. As federal officials continue addressing the reported damage, attention is likely to remain focused on both the condition of the monument and the investigation into the alleged vandalism.
