Spencer’s Expands Its Historic Cherry Hill Mall Store While Honoring Where Its Retail Journey Began
One of New Jersey’s most recognizable retail brands has reached another milestone by expanding its longtime presence at Cherry Hill Mall, the same shopping center where the company opened its first physical store more than six decades ago.
Spencer’s has officially relocated to a larger and more modern space inside Cherry Hill Mall, giving shoppers more room to explore the retailer’s well-known selection of novelty merchandise, apparel, accessories, and specialty products. While the store has moved to a new location within the mall, the expansion also serves as a reminder of the company’s deep connection to the shopping center and its place in New Jersey retail history.
The Cherry Hill Mall location holds a special place in the company’s story. Spencer’s first opened its doors there in 1963, marking its transition from a mail-order catalog business into brick-and-mortar retail. The company itself was founded in 1947 as a catalog retailer before making the move into physical stores.
The opening of the original Spencer’s store came during the early years of Cherry Hill Mall, which was among the first enclosed shopping malls in the United States. Today, even after decades of changes in the retail industry, Spencer’s remains one of only two original stores that continue to operate at the nearly 65-year-old shopping center.
The newly expanded location has been designed to provide a more spacious shopping experience while continuing to offer the products that have become closely associated with the Spencer’s brand. Customers can browse the retailer’s familiar collection of novelty T-shirts, lava lamps, gag gifts, apparel, accessories, body jewelry, drinkware, and sexual wellness products.
Steven Silverstein, CEO of Spencer’s, said the company’s roots at Cherry Hill Mall remain an important part of its identity. He noted that although the store has moved to a new space within the mall, the personality and customer experience that have defined Spencer’s for generations have not changed. According to Silverstein, the updated location celebrates the brand’s history while continuing to deliver the fun and unexpected shopping experience customers have enjoyed for more than 60 years.
To recognize the significance of the move, the company installed a commemorative plaque at the entrance of the new storefront. The marker highlights the importance of Cherry Hill Mall as the birthplace of Spencer’s retail operations and honors the company’s long-standing relationship with the shopping center.
Although Spencer’s has grown into a major retail chain with more than 680 locations across North America, it continues to stock several of the classic novelty items that longtime customers associate with the brand. Among those familiar products is the iconic Whoopee Cushion, which remains part of its merchandise lineup alongside newer offerings.
Cherry Hill Mall continues to be one of New Jersey’s largest shopping destinations. Located on Route 38 in Cherry Hill, the mall features approximately 1.35 million square feet of retail space and remains home to a mix of national retailers and longtime tenants.
The expansion of Spencer’s within Cherry Hill Mall reflects both the company’s continued growth and its commitment to preserving the location where its retail history first began. While the store now occupies a larger and updated space, its connection to Cherry Hill Mall remains an important part of the brand’s legacy.
