South Orange Family Escapes Early-Morning House Fire After Smoke Alarms Sound Warning
A family of four and their dog made it out safely after a house fire broke out early Wednesday morning in South Orange, according to local officials. Authorities said working smoke detectors inside the home played a major role in helping the family escape before the fire spread further.
The fire started around 3:30 a.m. inside the basement of a home located on the 200 block of Prospect Street. Emergency crews from the South Essex Fire Department responded to the scene and worked to bring the flames under control.
Officials confirmed that everyone inside the house escaped safely, including the family’s dog. One firefighter suffered minor burns while battling the blaze and is expected to recover.
Mayor Sheena Collum said the incident serves as a strong reminder for residents to regularly check smoke alarms in their homes and make sure they are functioning properly. Authorities noted that the alarms gave the family enough warning time to get out safely during the overnight emergency.
While no residents were physically injured, the fire caused major damage to the property. Officials said the home is now uninhabitable, and the family lost many personal belongings in the blaze.
Community support efforts are already underway following the incident. A GoFundMe campaign has reportedly been created to help the displaced family recover from the losses caused by the fire. The American Red Cross is also assisting the family with temporary lodging, food, and clothing needs.
The cause of the fire has not been publicly detailed. Fire crews remained active at the property after extinguishing the flames as officials continued their response and assessment of the damage.
