New Jersey Lawmakers Push to Honor Christina Grimmie With Annual Statewide Remembrance Day
Nearly 10 years after the tragic death of New Jersey singer and YouTube star Christina Grimmie, state lawmakers are moving forward with a proposal that would permanently recognize her legacy across the state. A new resolution introduced in New Jersey would officially designate June 10 as “Christina Grimmie Day” in memory of the Burlington County native whose music career inspired millions before her life was cut short in 2016.
Christina Grimmie became widely known after appearing on NBC’s “The Voice” in 2014, where she finished among the top finalists and gained national recognition for her powerful vocals and online fanbase. Before reaching television audiences across America, Grimmie had already built a strong following on YouTube through her performances of popular songs and original music. Her success online eventually opened major opportunities in the music industry and helped turn her into one of the early internet music stars.
Born and raised in Burlington County, Grimmie attended Marlton Middle School and Cherokee High School before shifting to homeschooling so she could focus fully on her growing music career. Her online popularity continued to rise rapidly, eventually attracting millions of subscribers to her YouTube channel. Today, her channel still holds millions of followers and remains active with fans who continue to celebrate her music and legacy.
Lawmakers from Burlington County introduced the proposal ahead of the 10th anniversary of Grimmie’s death. State Senators Troy Singleton and Latham Tiver announced the legislation as a way to honor not only her artistic accomplishments but also the lasting impact her story continues to have across New Jersey and beyond.
According to the lawmakers, the annual remembrance day would also serve as a continued reminder about the effects of gun violence and the importance of supporting victims and families affected by tragedy. Their proposal comes as many fans, supporters, and community members prepare to mark a decade since Grimmie’s death.
On June 10, 2016, Grimmie was shot and killed during a meet-and-greet event in Orlando, Florida. Authorities later determined the gunman was likely an obsessed fan. Her death shocked the entertainment industry and devastated supporters around the world who had followed her journey from YouTube performer to national television star.
Even after her passing, Grimmie’s influence has continued through charitable efforts started by her family. In 2017, the Christina Grimmie Foundation was created to help families affected by gun violence. Since its launch, the organization has provided financial assistance to hundreds of families and raised significant support for those dealing with similar tragedies.
The anniversary of her death will also be marked through a special event series known as Grimmie Fest, scheduled to take place from June 5 through June 7. The celebration will include music-related events and a benefit concert in Philadelphia honoring Grimmie’s life, music career, and charitable legacy.
The proposed legislation is currently awaiting consideration before the New Jersey Senate Law and Public Safety Committee. If approved, June 10 would become an officially recognized day in New Jersey dedicated to remembering Christina Grimmie’s life, career, and lasting impact on fans across the country.
