Overnight Blaze at Franklin Township Shopping Plaza Leaves Two Businesses With Significant Damage

A late-night fire at a shopping plaza in Franklin Township, New Jersey, caused extensive damage to two businesses and prompted a large emergency response from multiple fire departments, according to local authorities.

The fire was reported at approximately 11:45 p.m. Sunday at a commercial property located along the 700 block of Hamilton Street. Authorities said the blaze began at Super Tropical Foodmarket and quickly drew firefighters from several communities across Somerset and Middlesex counties as crews worked to prevent the flames from spreading further through the strip mall.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and battled the fire through the night. Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control and prevent injuries, with officials confirming that no civilians or first responders were harmed during the incident.

In addition to damage sustained by Super Tropical Foodmarket, a neighboring 99 Cents Plus store was also affected by the fire. The extent of the structural and interior damage has not yet been fully detailed, but both businesses experienced significant impacts as a result of the overnight emergency.

Videos recorded at the scene showed intense flames emerging from the rear portion of the building while ladder trucks directed large streams of water onto the fire. The response remained active for several hours as crews worked to extinguish remaining hot spots and ensure the area was safe.

The incident also led to traffic disruptions in the area. Hamilton Street was temporarily closed between Matilda Avenue and Baier Avenue while firefighters and emergency personnel conducted operations. The roadway remained inaccessible until early Monday morning before reopening to traffic.

Authorities have not yet determined what caused the fire. Investigators continue to examine the scene as part of an ongoing review into how the blaze started.

Officials are asking anyone who may have information related to the incident to contact Franklin Township’s fire prevention office. The investigation remains active, and additional details may be released as authorities complete their assessment of the damage and circumstances surrounding the fire.

The overnight fire serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by emergency crews responding to commercial building fires, particularly when multiple businesses share a connected structure. Thanks to the coordinated response from regional fire departments, the blaze was contained without reported injuries despite the significant damage left behind.
