Ocean Township Homicide Investigation Continues as Murder Suspect Remains Hospitalized

A 67-year-old Ocean Township man charged in connection with the death of his wife remains in critical condition after authorities found him unconscious at a Garden State Parkway rest stop, according to information released by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.

The case has shocked residents of the Ocean Township community, where the victim, 66-year-old Stacy Epstein-Kless, was known by many as a caring and active member of the neighborhood.

Authorities said Michael A. Kless has been charged with first-degree murder, along with third-degree and fourth-degree weapons offenses, following the death of his wife inside their Ocean Township home. Investigators identified a barbell as the weapon involved in the incident.

Police were called to the couple’s residence in the 100 block of Seward Drive at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday after receiving two separate 911 calls reporting a murder. When officers arrived at the home, they discovered Stacy Epstein-Kless deceased.

Following the investigation, law enforcement identified Michael A. Kless as the person responsible for the killing. Officials later located him unconscious inside a vehicle at a rest stop along the Garden State Parkway. Authorities said he was transported for medical treatment and remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The tragedy has deeply affected local residents and community leaders. Ocean Township Mayor John P. Napolitani Sr., who said he had known the couple personally, described Stacy Epstein-Kless as a kind and compassionate individual whose loss is being felt throughout the township.

According to the mayor, Epstein-Kless had previously worked as an educator and remained actively involved in community life. He noted that she frequently helped local residents by walking their dogs and was known for her friendly nature and willingness to assist others.

In a public statement, Napolitani expressed sorrow over the loss, saying that family members, friends, neighbors, and community members are mourning a woman who played an important role in many people’s lives.

Public records indicate that Michael A. Kless and Stacy Epstein-Kless had been married since 1987. The incident has left many residents searching for answers as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the case.
