Ocean County Man Gets 10-Year Prison Term After Violent Attack on Elderly Mother in Toms River

A 45-year-old man from Ocean County has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after admitting to a brutal attack on his 71-year-old mother inside her home in Toms River, according to local authorities. The case has drawn attention due to the seriousness of the injuries and the nature of the crime involving an elderly victim.
The man, identified as Joseph Cavallaro of Manchester, was sentenced following his guilty plea earlier this year to first-degree attempted murder. The incident took place on June 27, 2025, when what began as an argument between Cavallaro and his mother escalated into a violent assault.
Officials said Cavallaro used a cane during the attack, striking his mother and causing severe injuries. The victim suffered a fractured skull, broken ribs, facial fractures, and a concussion. Authorities confirmed that she lost consciousness during the assault, highlighting the intensity of the violence she endured.
Emergency responders were called to the Pine Acres Manor Mobile Home Park at approximately 12:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a woman in distress. Upon arrival, they found the victim in critical condition. She was immediately transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where she received medical treatment. Fortunately, she survived the attack and was later discharged after receiving care.
During court proceedings, prosecutors stated that Cavallaro admitted his intent during the assault was to cause his mother’s death. This admission played a key role in the severity of the charges and the final sentencing decision. In exchange for his guilty plea, several additional charges—including aggravated assault, terroristic threats, and weapons-related offenses—were dismissed.
The sentence falls under New Jersey’s No Early Release Act, a law that requires individuals convicted of certain violent crimes to serve at least 85% of their prison term before becoming eligible for parole. This means Cavallaro will be required to serve the majority of his 10-year sentence before any possibility of release.
Authorities also confirmed that Cavallaro has remained in custody at the Ocean County Jail since the time of his arrest. The sentencing marks the conclusion of a case that underscores the serious legal consequences of domestic violence, particularly when it involves vulnerable victims such as elderly family members.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of reporting domestic abuse and ensuring the safety of at-risk individuals. Law enforcement agencies continue to stress the need for community awareness and timely intervention in situations that may escalate into violence.
