Fatal Crash on Garden State Parkway in Ocean County Leaves New York Woman Dead
A serious crash on the Garden State Parkway in Ocean County turned deadly Friday after two passenger vehicles collided in Lacey Township, according to the New Jersey State Police. The crash resulted in the death of a 20-year-old New York woman and left several other people, including an infant, with minor injuries.
The collision happened around 3 p.m. near milepost 75.8 in Lacey Township, an area of the Parkway in Ocean County. Investigators said the incident began when a Toyota sedan driven by 26-year-old Johan Mendez of New York left the roadway and struck the left guardrail.
The Toyota had four passengers inside at the time. After hitting the guardrail, the vehicle returned to the roadway, where it became involved in a collision with a Hyundai sedan.
The impact was severe enough to eject two people who were travelling in the Hyundai’s back seat. They were identified as 20-year-old Iisiz Lopez of New York and an infant.
Lopez suffered fatal injuries in the crash. She was pronounced dead as a result of the collision, according to information provided by state police.
The infant survived the crash but was among those taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials said the infant and the other people involved in the collision suffered minor injuries.
Mendez, the driver of the Toyota, was also transported to an area hospital. The remaining passengers in the Toyota received medical treatment as well. The driver of the Hyundai was likewise reported to have suffered minor injuries.
The crash created a major traffic disruption along the Garden State Parkway. Authorities closed all northbound lanes in the affected section while emergency crews responded to the scene and investigators worked to document what happened.
The closure caused traffic to back up for several miles in Ocean County. Drivers travelling through the area faced significant delays as emergency personnel dealt with the aftermath of the collision.
The affected section of the Parkway was reopened at approximately 8:30 p.m., although motorists experienced delays even after the roadway was cleared.
The Garden State Parkway is a major north-south highway serving communities throughout New Jersey and is heavily used by commuters, local residents and travellers. A major crash on the route can quickly create traffic problems well beyond the immediate crash location.
In this case, the combination of the initial vehicle leaving the roadway, the guardrail impact and the subsequent collision with another sedan resulted in a complicated crash scene involving multiple occupants.
The circumstances that caused the Toyota to leave the roadway have not been established publicly. Investigators will need to determine what happened immediately before the vehicle struck the guardrail and how the two vehicles came into contact afterward.
Authorities have not indicated that any specific factor, such as speeding, distracted driving, mechanical failure or impairment, caused the crash. Until investigators complete their work, those possible causes should not be assumed.
