New Jersey Power Outages Continue as More Than 175,000 Customers Remain Without Electricity Following Severe Storms

Thousands of New Jersey residents are spending the Fourth of July holiday without electricity after powerful thunderstorms swept across the state Friday night, leaving widespread power outages and damage behind. Utility outage reports showed that more than 175,000 customers were still without power on Saturday morning, creating additional challenges as dangerous heat continues across the region.
According to the latest outage information available Saturday morning, approximately 177,000 customers across New Jersey remained without electricity at around 8:30 a.m. The outages followed a line of intense thunderstorms that moved through the state Friday evening, bringing damaging wind gusts strong enough to knock down trees and power lines in several communities.
The severe weather produced wind gusts reaching between 60 and 70 mph in some locations. Those powerful winds caused extensive damage to utility infrastructure, resulting in widespread service interruptions across multiple counties. Emergency reports also documented numerous fallen trees and damaged power lines as the storms passed through.
Among the hardest-hit areas were Hunterdon, Monmouth, Somerset, Sussex, and Warren counties, where storm damage led to numerous reports of downed trees blocking roads and damaging electrical lines. Utility crews are expected to continue restoration efforts as they work to safely repair damaged equipment and restore electricity to affected neighborhoods.
The timing of the outages has made conditions especially difficult for many residents, as New Jersey continues to experience an intense heat wave. Temperatures are expected to climb close to 100 degrees in parts of the state on Saturday, increasing concerns for households that remain without air conditioning and other essential electrical services.
Weather conditions may also complicate ongoing restoration work. Forecasters are warning that another round of thunderstorms is expected later on the Fourth of July, with storms developing between approximately 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. These storms could once again bring strong wind gusts and areas of localized flooding, creating the potential for additional damage and new power outages.
With another period of active weather in the forecast, residents are encouraged to stay alert for changing conditions throughout the day. Those currently without electricity may experience longer restoration times if additional storms impact repair operations or cause further damage to the power grid.
The combination of severe thunderstorms, widespread power outages, and extreme heat has created a difficult start to the holiday weekend for many New Jersey communities. Utility companies continue monitoring the situation while repair crews respond to outage reports across the state, even as forecasters keep a close watch on the next round of potentially severe weather expected later Saturday.
