New Jersey Driver Receives Five-Year Prison Term After Fatal Early Morning Crash in Roxbury

A New Jersey man has been sentenced to state prison after a deadly early morning crash in Roxbury that claimed the life of his passenger, following a guilty plea earlier this year.
Alexander Serrano, 34, of East Rutherford, was sentenced to five years in New Jersey state prison in connection with the crash. According to prosecutors, he must serve at least four years and three months before becoming eligible for parole.
The incident took place on April 28, 2025, at around 5:30 a.m. on Howard Boulevard near Ledgewood Road in Roxbury. Authorities said Serrano was driving when his vehicle struck a tree in what was described as a serious collision.
His passenger, 30-year-old Esmeralda Melchar, also of East Rutherford, died at the scene due to the severity of the crash. Emergency responders were unable to save her after arriving at the location.
Investigators determined the circumstances of the crash were linked to reckless driving behavior. Serrano later admitted responsibility and pleaded guilty in April 2026 to reckless vehicular homicide, which led to the sentencing decision.
The case was handled by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, which confirmed the sentencing details and parole eligibility requirements.
Officials have not released additional details about the moments leading up to the crash, but the case has been treated as a serious traffic-related fatality under New Jersey law. The sentencing reflects the legal consequences for reckless driving that results in loss of life.
The incident serves as another reminder of the risks associated with unsafe driving, particularly during early morning hours when visibility and reaction time can be reduced.
