A civilian employee with the U.S. Department of the Navy has been placed on administrative leave after a secretly recorded video captured him making critical remarks about President Donald Trump, U.S. policy toward Iran, and several workplace practices inside the Pentagon. The incident has drawn significant attention after the footage was shared online, prompting a public response from senior Navy leadership.
The video, released by conservative activist James O’Keefe, shows the staff member expressing personal opinions about President Trump and discussing how he viewed certain government policies. During the conversation, he also suggested that he intended to remain in his government position in order to reverse some of the administration’s policies after President Trump eventually leaves office.
Among the issues discussed in the recording was the practice of holding Christian worship and prayer services within the Pentagon. The employee argued that government workplaces should not favour one particular religious service, saying he did not believe there should be a single specific prayer service available in the department. The employee also criticised the Trump administration’s handling of the growing tensions with Iran. Speaking in the recorded conversation, he described the conflict as unnecessary and questioned the reasoning behind recent military decisions. He referred to President Trump as “a textbook narcissist” and suggested that the conflict was being influenced more by personal leadership style than by national security concerns.

In his statement, Cao said that comments suggesting an intention to use a government position to work against policies established by elected leaders are inconsistent with the responsibilities expected of Department personnel. He also confirmed that the employee had been placed on administrative leave while the department reviews the matter.
The acting secretary further stated that officials will determine the appropriate next steps after reviewing the facts. According to Cao, the goal is to ensure accountability while protecting the integrity and mission of the Department of the Navy. However, he did not publicly identify the employee or confirm the individual’s specific role within the department.
James O’Keefe welcomed the department’s response after the announcement was made. He thanked Navy leadership for addressing the matter and indicated that he intends to continue monitoring developments surrounding the case.
