Monroe Township Expands to Full-Day Kindergarten in Major Shift for Families and Students

Families in Monroe Township will soon see a major change in early childhood education as the local school district prepares to launch full-day kindergarten beginning in the 2026–27 school year. The decision marks an important transition for one of the last remaining districts in New Jersey that still operated under a half-day kindergarten system.
The Monroe Township School District confirmed the expansion last month, calling the move a long-awaited step forward for students and parents across the community. The district, located in Middlesex County, had remained among only a handful of New Jersey school systems that had not yet adopted a full-day kindergarten schedule.
School leaders described the change as a significant investment in younger students during the most important stage of early learning. Educators believe the longer school day will give children more time to strengthen reading, writing, communication, and classroom interaction skills while also helping them grow socially and emotionally.
Erinn Mahoney, principal of Barclay Brook Elementary School, said the expanded program will help students build stronger academic foundations while also encouraging independence and confidence at an early age. District officials believe full-day learning environments can better prepare children for later grades by providing more consistent instruction and classroom engagement.
The announcement also places Monroe alongside several other New Jersey districts that are making the same transition this fall, including Cranford, Hillsborough, and Bridgewater-Raritan. Across the state, more school systems are adjusting their kindergarten programs ahead of upcoming statewide requirements.
Under legislation signed by Gov. Phil Murphy, all New Jersey school districts must provide full-day kindergarten by the beginning of the 2029–30 school year. The law is expected to reshape early education statewide by ensuring equal access to longer kindergarten instruction for families regardless of where they live.
Unlike some districts that previously offered paid extended-day programs, Monroe Township did not provide a tuition-based full-day option for parents. The upcoming program will instead be offered free of charge to eligible students.
District officials also confirmed that the expansion is moving forward without additional state financial support. The costs associated with launching the program were included directly in the school district’s budget planning. In past years, attempts to expand kindergarten services in Monroe faced setbacks after school construction bond proposals failed to gain voter approval.
Acting Superintendent Adam Layman described the decision as a historic moment for the district. He said the launch of full-day kindergarten reflects years of planning and cooperation among school administrators, educators, and the broader community.
The district has not yet announced when enrollment for the new program will officially open. However, officials said families who have already completed registration will not need to take any additional steps at this time. More details regarding scheduling, classroom planning, and student enrollment are expected to be shared in the coming months.
Education experts across New Jersey continue to view full-day kindergarten as an important part of early academic development. Supporters argue that longer instructional time gives teachers more opportunities to focus on both educational growth and social development, especially for students entering school for the first time.
For Monroe Township families, the upcoming school year will represent a major shift in how young students begin their educational journey. After years of discussion and delayed efforts, the district is now preparing for what local officials are calling one of the most significant educational changes in recent community history.
