Historic Keansburg Bakery With Nearly a Century of History May See New Ownership After Sudden Closure

An iconic piece of Keansburg’s local food history may soon get a second chance after its unexpected shutdown over the weekend, as a prospective buyer has stepped forward with interest in reviving the long-running bakery.

The well-known bakery, Dixie Lee Bakery, which has been part of the community since the 1930s, officially closed its doors on Sunday. The closure marked the end of an era for a business that had served generations of customers with classic baked goods such as pastries and doughnuts.

The bakery was most recently operated under the ownership of celebrity chef David Burke, who had leased the historic property. Following the closure, Burke pointed to ongoing challenges faced by traditional bakeries, including shifting consumer habits and rising operational pressures, as key factors behind the decision to shut down.

Just days after the closure, interest in reopening the bakery has already emerged. A North Plainfield resident, Angelo Rotondo, publicly shared his intention to potentially take over the business. In a social media statement, he expressed optimism about restoring the bakery and connecting with the local community, signaling strong enthusiasm for bringing the historic shop back to life.

Rotondo also mentioned his family ties to the Hazlet area, which places him within the broader Bayshore region where the bakery has long held cultural and community significance. His local connection could play a role in shaping future discussions around ownership and community trust.

At this stage, however, the situation remains uncertain. No official agreement has been confirmed, and it is still unclear whether the property will be sold or leased to a new operator. The final decision will depend on negotiations between interested parties and the current property stakeholders.

Community members familiar with the bakery’s long history have expressed hope that the business will not disappear permanently. The location has been a familiar stop for residents for nearly a century, making its potential revival a point of local interest.

As discussions continue, the future of the bakery remains open-ended, with the possibility of a revival now on the table but not yet finalized.
