George Washington Bridge to Receive Permanent Nightly Tower Lighting for America’s 250th Anniversary

The George Washington Bridge is set to enter a new chapter as its iconic towers will now be illuminated every night, marking a historic change for one of the busiest and most recognizable bridges in the United States. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced that the bridge’s two towers will be permanently lit from dusk until 10 p.m., making this the first time in the bridge’s 94-year history that the towers will receive regular nightly lighting.

The new lighting schedule has been introduced as part of the celebration of America’s 250th birthday. While the bridge has long featured illuminated cables, the addition of permanent tower lighting will create a more complete nighttime appearance and highlight one of the region’s most famous landmarks every evening.

This milestone became possible after a major lighting upgrade carried out by the Port Authority. By the end of 2025, nearly 800 traditional light bulbs were replaced with modern energy-efficient LED fixtures. The modernization project was designed to improve efficiency while reducing long-term operating costs.

Before this upgrade, the towers were illuminated only during major holidays and special occasions. Although traditional lighting was installed in 2000, it was never intended for nightly operation. The transition from 1,000-watt conventional bulbs to 600-watt LED lights has made permanent illumination practical by lowering both energy use and maintenance demands.

According to the Port Authority, the LED conversion delivers approximately 40 percent savings in energy and operating costs compared with the previous lighting system. The improved efficiency allows the bridge to maintain its enhanced nighttime appearance while using less electricity than the older setup.

The George Washington Bridge first opened to traffic in 1931 and has remained one of the most significant transportation links connecting New York and New Jersey. For decades, its towers have served as a recognizable feature of the skyline, but regular nighttime illumination had never been part of the bridge’s design until now.

With the new permanent lighting schedule, motorists, commuters, and visitors will see the bridge’s towers illuminated every evening from dusk until 10 p.m. The change reflects both a modernization effort and a commemorative tribute tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary, while also demonstrating how updated technology can improve energy efficiency without changing the bridge’s historic identity.
