Elderly Woman Attacked and Car Stolen Outside New Jersey Pharmacy, Suspect Arrested Within Hours

An 80-year-old woman became the victim of a violent carjacking early Sunday morning in a pharmacy parking lot in Bergen County, New Jersey, according to local police. The incident, which took place in a typically quiet neighborhood, has raised fresh concerns about public safety, especially for elderly residents.
Authorities reported that the woman was sitting inside her SUV around 8:20 a.m. in the parking lot of a Walgreens located on South Washington Avenue in Bergenfield. At that time, a man approached her vehicle and demanded that she hand over her keys. When the victim refused to comply, the situation quickly turned aggressive.
Police stated that the suspect forcefully pulled the woman out of her vehicle during the confrontation. In the process, he also grabbed her purse before fleeing the scene in her SUV. The victim suffered minor injuries during the struggle but was treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization.
Witnesses present in the area played an important role in the investigation. They provided key details to law enforcement officers, which helped identify the suspect and track the stolen vehicle. Their quick response significantly contributed to the swift progress of the case.
Roughly an hour later, at around 9:30 a.m., police located the stolen SUV on East Forest Avenue in nearby Teaneck. Officers conducted a traffic stop and arrested the driver without further incident. The suspect was identified as a 35-year-old man from Bergenfield.
Following his arrest, authorities charged him with multiple serious offenses, including first-degree carjacking and second-degree robbery. Additional charges included simple assault, terroristic threats, and theft. Police also confirmed that a 4-inch knife was found in his possession, leading to an added weapons-related charge.
The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Bergen County Jail, where he is currently awaiting a court hearing. As of the latest available information, no attorney details have been listed in official records.
This incident highlights the importance of community awareness and quick reporting in helping law enforcement respond effectively to crimes. While the victim is safe and recovering, the case serves as a reminder of the risks that can occur even in everyday locations like store parking lots.
