Texas Senate Showdown Heats Up Amid Scandals and Strategic Moves

Texas’ Senate campaign is heating up as two prominent Republicans prepare for a May runoff after a close March primary. Both incumbent Senator John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton are seeking former President Donald Trump’s backing. This is one of the state’s most carefully followed campaigns due to personal controversies, campaign insults, and high-profile policy proposals.

Cornyn recently aired a harsh campaign commercial against Paxton. The 46-second commercial portrays Paxton as focused with personal scandals rather than Attorney General duties. The commercial highlights charges of adultery, lavish spending above his pay, and publically scrutinized personal conduct. Cornyn’s campaign urges viewers to report wrongdoing through its platform.

Paxton, 63, has faced many legal and personal issues since taking office in 2014. He survived a legislative impeachment, a lengthy securities fraud investigation, and a public divorce. State Senator Angela Paxton filed for biblical divorce in July 2025, citing adultery. She said the marriage would neither honor her principles or help her family. A 2023 Texas House impeachment trial mentioned Paxton’s extramarital liaison with a former aide, but he was cleared of all 16 accusations.

Personal appeals from family members have entered the political battle. In an ad for Paxton, his daughter Mattie Hayworth lauded her father’s faith, family values, and patriotism. Paxton used this personal story to rebut Cornyn’s accusations and keep voter support.

Both contenders want Trump’s backing, which is a major factor. The two have highlighted their support for Trump’s voter ID SAVE America Act. In a surprising move, Cornyn now supports abolishing the Senate filibuster to approve the act. Paxton had promised to abandon the race if the Senate passed it. Paxton blasted Cornyn’s flip-flop on social media as political opportunism and asked why other prominent Republicans who opposed the bill were not condemned.

Political disputes, personal scandals, and Trump support strategy are making the runoff election a high-stakes race. The Texas Senate race is likely to be a national focus in the coming months as both candidates aim to appeal to conservative supporters and show allegiance to Trump’s legislative agenda.
