Chris Redd Opens Up About Addiction and Support During His ‘SNL’ Years

Chris Redd, a former “Saturday Night Live” cast member, opened up about his struggles with substance usage. Redd, who appeared on “SNL” from 2017 to 2022, described his problem with prescription medication use in a January 6 Instagram video.
“I had some issues with pills,” Redd said. “Not crazy, but serious for me. I even sold to certain castmates. Not naming anyone.”
Redd lamented his castmates’ lack of support at this trying time. While some colleagues discussed his drug use, no one provided advice. “I would have panic attacks, and they wouldn’t care,” he added. “They just talked about it. It’s terrible to feel that someone is watching you kill yourself without helping.”
Redd’s video focused on his relationship with Christina Evangeline, who was married to his “SNL” co-star Kenan Thompson from 2011 until 2022. Redd stressed that he would never hurt a buddy and described his complicated circumstance. He said, “This was a very unique, nuanced thing that happened.”
Redd said Evangeline helped him through therapy and substance usage. She was the only one who cared about my health. We fell in love as she helped me with therapy, he added. He cherished his friendship and professional connection with Thompson, therefore this relationship caused emotional strain.
Redd said he and Thompson were on good terms when working on “SNL.” He admitted that public knowledge of his connection with Evangeline changed their relationship.
Redd grew sad as he considered how his choices may have disappointed loved ones. He said therapy helped him manage his feelings and turn rage into understanding. “Ever since I realized I’m more sad than angry, my anger issues have turned into tears,” he stated. I regret disappointing others. I couldn’t miss this love, so I went for it.”
Redd’s transparency illuminates the human hardships behind high-profile occupations and emphasizes the need for mental health help, treatment, and understanding in difficult circumstances.
NBC will air new episodes of “Saturday Night Live” at 11:30 p.m. on Saturdays starting January 17. Eastern Time and streamed on Peacock the next day.
