Mississippi Mother Receives Life Sentence After Admitting to Son’s Murder and Concealing His Body Inside Home

A Mississippi woman has been sentenced to life in prison after admitting that she killed her adult son and concealed his body behind a fake wall inside her home, bringing a tragic criminal case to a close nearly three years after the killing.

Jerri Roby, 69, of Gulfport, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of her 42-year-old son, John Gaither. The court handed down a life sentence following her guilty plea, ending a case that shocked both investigators and the local community because of the disturbing efforts made to hide the crime.

According to court proceedings, Gaither died from a gunshot wound to the back of his head. His body remained hidden inside a large wooden container that had been placed behind a false wall constructed within Roby’s home. Authorities said the remains were covered with materials that investigators later connected to purchases made by Roby before her son was officially reported missing.

During the plea hearing, Roby told the court that she shot her son in what she described as a “spur of the moment” decision. She claimed she believed she was putting him “out of his misery” because he had been struggling with depression. Despite that statement, prosecutors pursued the first-degree murder charge, and Roby ultimately accepted responsibility by entering a guilty plea.

The investigation began in December 2023 after Gaither disappeared. Concerned about his whereabouts, his brother contacted the Gulfport Police Department and reported him missing. As the investigation continued, detectives gathered evidence that eventually led them back to Roby’s residence.

In January 2024, investigators executed a search warrant at the home. During the search, officers discovered what appeared to be a fake wall in the front section of the house. Behind it, they found a large wooden box containing Gaither’s body. Investigators also recovered materials surrounding the remains that matched supplies Roby had purchased from a local home improvement store before the missing person’s report was filed.

Authorities later reviewed purchase records showing Roby had bought multiple construction and landscaping materials, including bags of sand, sealing tape, straw, plastic sheeting, soil, and large disposal bags. Prosecutors said many of those same materials were found covering the victim’s body, strengthening the evidence gathered during the investigation.

Officials also revealed that when law enforcement attempted to remove Roby from the home during the search, she swallowed pharmaceutical pills and was taken to a hospital for medical treatment before the criminal investigation continued.

As investigators worked to determine what had happened, prosecutors said Roby went to significant lengths to convince family members that her son was still alive. According to the prosecution, she admitted to creating fake letters that appeared to come from Gaither. She also allegedly sent text messages while pretending to be him and persuaded her boyfriend to contact relatives while posing as Gaither during phone conversations.

Investigators further stated that Gaither’s cellphone was taken to Florida and used there in an apparent effort to create the impression that he had travelled out of state. Prosecutors argued that these actions were part of an effort to delay the investigation and mislead both family members and law enforcement.

During questioning, Roby reportedly offered investigators a different explanation, claiming that her son had shot himself before falling into the wooden container where she later covered the body with the materials she had purchased. However, the medical examination determined that Gaither died from a gunshot wound to the back of the head, and prosecutors moved forward with the murder case.

The case drew widespread attention because of the elaborate concealment of the victim’s body and the alleged attempts to create false evidence after the killing. Law enforcement officials described the investigation as one that required months of careful work, including the review of physical evidence, purchase records, digital communications, and witness information.

With Roby’s guilty plea and life sentence now finalised, the criminal case has reached its legal conclusion. The sentencing closes a lengthy investigation while bringing accountability in the death of John Gaither, whose disappearance led to the discovery of one of the region’s most unusual homicide investigations in recent years.
