2 men fatally shot in N.J. after gunfire erupts during clash between groups
Two men lost their lives after a shooting broke out during a confrontation between two groups in North Arlington, New Jersey, on Sunday night, according to authorities investigating the incident.
The violence unfolded at around 8:35 p.m. near the intersection of Ridge Road and Route 7, an area close to the border between Bergen County and neighboring Hudson County. The location is also near the Belleville Turnpike, a roadway that extends into Essex County.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene after multiple 911 calls reported gunfire in the area. Officers from the North Arlington Police Department, nearby law enforcement agencies, and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office responded quickly and located two men suffering from gunshot wounds.
Authorities said the victims, ages 28 and 29, were transported in separate ambulances to University Hospital in Newark. Despite emergency medical treatment, both men were pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Officials have not released the identities of the victims because their families are still being notified.
According to investigators, the initial findings indicate that the gunfire erupted during an altercation involving two small groups of people near the intersection. Detectives continue to work to determine what led to the confrontation and the events that resulted in the fatal shooting.

The incident marks the first homicide reported in North Arlington in more than five years. The borough’s last homicide investigation occurred in April 2021, when a husband and wife were found dead inside their apartment. Prosecutors later concluded that the husband had fatally stabbed his wife before his own death, and investigators determined that no other individuals were involved in that case.
The last homicide in North Arlington that resulted in a criminal prosecution dates back more than a decade. In 2016, a woman was found dead inside her apartment after suffering fatal injuries. Court records later showed that her husband pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and received a 45-year prison sentence.
The latest shooting has renewed attention on violent crime in a community that has experienced relatively few homicide investigations in recent years. Law enforcement officials continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the deadly confrontation as they work to identify everyone involved and determine whether criminal charges will be filed.
