West New York to Build New $121.8 Million Middle School as Student Enrollment Grows

Students and families in West New York will see a major investment in public education after plans moved forward for a new state-funded middle school that is expected to open in September 2028. The project, valued at $121.8 million, is designed to help meet the educational needs of one of New Jersey’s most densely populated communities and provide additional classroom space for future generations.

According to official project information, the new school will be a 162,000-square-foot facility located on Broadway, approximately half a mile from the existing West New York Middle School. While planning documents currently refer to the building as West New York Middle School, the local school board will decide its official name before the school opens.

The new campus will have the capacity to serve up to 876 students in grades 6 through 8. Once the building is completed, the West New York School District will reorganize its grade structure. The district’s six elementary schools, which currently educate students from kindergarten through sixth grade, will instead serve kindergarten through fifth grade. Both middle schools will then educate students in grades 6 through 8, creating additional space and improving the overall distribution of students across the district.

West New York is one of the most crowded municipalities in the United States. Although the town covers only one square mile, it is home to roughly 52,000 residents. Its growing population has continued to place pressure on public infrastructure, including local schools, making additional educational facilities an important long-term investment.

Construction plans advanced following a groundbreaking ceremony held on June 18 at the future school site. The property was previously occupied by a four-story warehouse measuring approximately 102,000 square feet before it was demolished more than a decade ago. The location will now be transformed into a modern educational facility designed to support the district’s expanding student population.

West New York Schools Superintendent Clara Brito Herrera said the new school will provide an environment where students can develop their abilities, explore their interests, and prepare for future success. She described the project as an investment that will benefit generations of learners by creating opportunities for academic growth and personal achievement.

New Jersey Schools Development Authority Chief Executive Officer Manuel Da Silva also emphasized the importance of the project, saying the additional middle school will expand educational opportunities for students throughout the community.

The project is being managed by the New Jersey Schools Development Authority, the state agency responsible for constructing and renovating schools in 31 of New Jersey’s designated school districts. These districts receive state support to improve educational facilities and address long-term infrastructure needs.

State education data for the 2024-25 academic year shows that West New York Middle School currently enrolls 1,083 students. The report also indicates that 91% of those students are classified as economically disadvantaged and qualify for free or reduced-price meal programs, highlighting the importance of continued public investment in educational resources.

The upcoming middle school will become the seventh school construction project completed by the New Jersey Schools Development Authority in West New York. Since the 2020 U.S. Census recorded a population of 52,912 residents, the authority has invested approximately $216 million across six previous education projects in the township.

One of those earlier projects included the expansion of Memorial High School, originally opened in 1926. About a decade ago, the school was enlarged after the authority purchased a neighboring former Catholic school building for $12 million to increase educational space.

The New Jersey Schools Development Authority was established in 2007 after replacing the former New Jersey Schools Construction Corporation. The previous agency had been dissolved following spending-related controversies. Since then, the authority has continued overseeing school construction and modernization projects across eligible districts to improve learning environments for students.

With construction now moving ahead, the new middle school represents another significant step toward addressing classroom capacity while supporting the educational needs of one of New Jersey’s fastest-growing and most densely populated communities. Once completed in 2028, the facility is expected to play a central role in reshaping how middle school education is delivered across the West New York School District.
