Upper Township Cybersecurity Incident Exposes Sensitive Resident Data Including Financial and Identity Details
Authorities in Cape May County have confirmed a serious cybersecurity incident affecting Upper Township, where a data breach exposed a wide range of residents’ personal and financial information. Officials are now advising affected individuals to closely monitor their financial accounts and credit activity for any signs of misuse.
According to the investigation, the breach originally took place on October 5, 2025, when an unauthorized party gained access to township systems. The exposed data included highly sensitive personal details such as names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, state identification card information, and financial records including credit and debit card data.
In addition to identity and financial details, the compromised information also included digital login credentials. This involved usernames, email addresses, passwords, and even security questions and answers, raising concerns about potential account access risks for residents.
Township officials stated that suspicious activity on their network was first detected on December 8, 2025. Following this discovery, they immediately launched an internal investigation to determine the scope and nature of the incident. The review process confirmed that unauthorized access had occurred and that certain files containing personal data may have been accessed.
The investigation was completed on April 13, confirming the extent of the breach. However, officials noted that there is currently no evidence indicating that the stolen information has been misused or that any fraudulent activity has been reported as a direct result of the incident.
After identifying the breach, the township took affected systems offline and implemented additional security measures. Officials also stated that they are reviewing and improving their data storage systems, internal policies, and cybersecurity procedures to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.
As a precaution, Upper Township is encouraging all potentially affected residents to carefully review bank statements and regularly check credit reports for unusual or unauthorized activity. Residents have also been advised to immediately report any suspicious transactions to their financial institutions.
