State Police Move In After Night of Confrontation Outside Newark Detention Center
A tense situation outside Newark’s Delaney Hall immigration detention center escalated Friday night when a confrontation broke out between protesters and New Jersey State Police, just hours after state officials announced plans aimed at reducing tensions and creating designated areas for peaceful demonstrations.
The incident followed several days of unrest around the detention facility, where activists have been protesting immigration detention policies and the operation of the center. State officials and protesters have offered sharply different accounts of what happened during the confrontation, highlighting the growing debate surrounding public safety, protest rights, and immigration enforcement.
According to New Jersey officials, State Police officers were deployed to help manage public safety outside Delaney Hall after repeated clashes between demonstrators and federal immigration authorities throughout the week. Earlier Friday, Governor Mikie Sherrill and Attorney General Jennifer Davenport announced that the state would take a larger role in maintaining order around the facility and establishing areas where people could continue to protest peacefully.
However, the situation changed dramatically later that evening.
State officials said police intervention became necessary after some protesters allegedly refused repeated requests to clear an area needed for employees leaving the facility.
