Sri Lanka Flood Emergency Worsens as Deadly Landslides Claim Lives and Thousands Leave Their Homes
Days of relentless rainfall have pushed several parts of Sri Lanka into a dangerous situation, with floods and landslides causing deaths, damaging homes, and forcing thousands of people to seek safety. Authorities have stepped up rescue efforts as severe weather continues to affect the country’s central highland regions, where the impact has been the greatest.
Officials confirmed that at least five people lost their lives after landslides buried two homes in Sri Lanka’s central mountainous area. Rescue teams are also searching for two people who remain missing, while three others suffered injuries during the disaster.
Heavy rain over the past two days has led to widespread flooding across many districts. Overflowing rivers, flooded roads, and waterlogged farmland have disrupted daily life for thousands of residents. Emergency officials say the combination of saturated soil and continuous rainfall has significantly increased the risk of additional landslides in vulnerable hillside communities.
The country’s Disaster Management Center reported that the central highlands have experienced the most severe conditions. Local authorities have urged residents living in landslide-prone locations to remain alert and follow evacuation orders whenever issued.
As a safety measure, schools in several mountainous areas were closed on Tuesday to protect students and staff from dangerous travel conditions. Officials continue to monitor weather forecasts before deciding when educational institutions can safely reopen.
The severe weather has also caused significant property damage. Government officials said at least 129 homes have been affected by flooding and landslides. Many families have been displaced after their houses became unsafe or inaccessible due to rising water and unstable ground.
Nearly 2,000 people have been evacuated from high-risk areas and moved to temporary shelters or safer locations. Emergency response teams are providing assistance to affected communities while assessing the full extent of the damage.
Sri Lanka’s military has joined the emergency response. Navy and Army personnel have been deployed to rescue stranded residents, assist evacuation operations, and deliver support to communities cut off by floodwaters. Rescue crews continue to work in difficult conditions as rainfall and unstable terrain create ongoing challenges.
Authorities are closely monitoring the weather as additional rain could worsen flooding and trigger more landslides. Disaster management officials have advised people living near rivers, steep slopes, and flood-prone areas to stay informed through official weather updates and immediately follow instructions from local emergency authorities.
