Ocean County Animal Refuge Faces Major Repairs After Powerful February Blizzard

After a strong February blizzard damaged a popular Ocean County animal refuge, it is recovering. After a tough winter, the storm wreaked havoc on the shelter’s finances and operations.

Popcorn Park Animal Refuge in Lacey Township said the winter storm extensively damaged its grounds. The refuge stated that the blizzard damaged animal habitats, fences, shelters, and other vital infrastructure needed to securely care for animals. Severe and unanticipated damage occurred.

Storm timing exacerbated the dilemma. A hard winter caused the sanctuary to close to tourists. The facility’s closures reduced public activity, and the February blizzard devastated it, straining its resources.

Refuge authorities said urgent repairs are underway to stabilize and restore affected sites. Repairing fencing and habitats is crucial to animal safety. To keep operations running smoothly, structural repairs are needed.

However, these repairs have been costly. Rebuilding and infrastructure restoration costs have prompted the shelter to begin a contribution campaign on its website. The group has sought fans and community members for help at this difficult time.

The oldest animal welfare group in New Jersey, Associated Humane Societies, runs Popcorn Park Animal Refuge. The Lacey Township refuge has benefited the community since 1977. It has grown into a popular tourist destination and animal refuge over the years.

The February blizzard shows how harsh winter weather may affect communal institutions, especially nonprofits that depend on public funding. As repairs continue, refuge authorities aim on restoring full operations and protecting the animals.

As recovery efforts continue, the refuge is inviting citizens to help rebuild so it can continue its purpose without long-term impediments.’
