New Jersey Police Officer Steps In as Baby Arrives During Emergency Stop at Wawa

A routine drive to the hospital turned into an unforgettable family moment when a South Jersey couple welcomed their baby much sooner than expected. What began as a trip to the maternity ward quickly became an emergency delivery in the parking lot of a Wawa convenience store, where a local police officer helped ensure the newborn arrived safely.

The unexpected birth happened on the evening of July 7 when Tayler and Phil Durham, residents of Newfield in Gloucester County, were travelling to Virtua Voorhees Hospital after labour began. As contractions became stronger and more frequent, it became clear they would not reach the hospital in time.

Realising the urgency of the situation, Phil pulled into a Wawa parking lot along Route 73 in Berlin, New Jersey. He immediately called 911 while preparing to help his wife deliver their baby inside the family vehicle. Emergency dispatchers stayed on the phone, providing guidance until first responders reached the scene.

Berlin Police Officer Dominic Hodson was among the first to arrive. As he approached the vehicle, he saw Phil already assisting with the delivery. Within moments, the baby was born before additional emergency medical personnel could take over.

Officer Hodson quickly shifted his focus to the newborn, making sure the baby could breathe properly. He carefully cleared fluids from around the infant’s nose and mouth and monitored the child while waiting for emergency medical services to arrive. The newborn cried shortly after birth, an encouraging sign that brought relief to everyone present.

The baby boy, later identified as Henderson Lee Durham, was born healthy and weighed just over eight pounds. EMS crews soon arrived, cut the umbilical cord, and transported both mother and baby to Virtua Voorhees Hospital for further medical evaluation.

Despite the stressful circumstances, both mother and son remained in good condition. Hospital staff continued routine post-delivery care, and the family was able to return home after spending two days recovering.

For Tayler Durham, the experience was both emotional and overwhelming. She praised her husband for remaining calm under pressure and successfully helping deliver their son before emergency crews arrived. She also expressed gratitude to Officer Hodson for caring for the newborn during those critical first moments.

Like many parents facing an unexpected birth outside a hospital, Tayler admitted she initially worried because she was unable to hold her baby immediately after delivery. Once she learnt he was healthy and safe, those concerns eased, although she later reflected on how surreal it felt to give birth in a busy public parking lot with several people assisting.

Officer Hodson also credited the emergency dispatcher and EMS personnel for their teamwork during the incident. According to him, everyone involved played an important role in keeping both mother and baby safe until they reached the hospital.

The experience marked a first in Officer Hodson’s law enforcement career. Having joined the police department in 2022, he said he had only received limited childbirth training during the police academy and never expected to use those skills in a real-life emergency. Even so, he responded quickly and remained focused throughout the incident.

Emergency childbirths outside hospitals are uncommon but not unheard of. Medical experts encourage families to call 911 immediately if labour progresses rapidly and reaching a hospital is no longer possible. Emergency dispatchers are trained to guide callers through critical situations until first responders arrive.

Because Henderson was born before reaching the hospital, the family experienced a slight delay in completing the birth certificate process, a routine administrative step that can occur when births happen outside licensed medical facilities. The delay did not affect the baby’s health or the family’s discharge from the hospital.

The incident has drawn attention across New Jersey as an example of how cooperation between family members, emergency dispatchers, police officers, and EMS professionals can make a significant difference during unexpected emergencies. Their quick actions helped turn a potentially frightening situation into a safe and successful delivery.

For the Durham family, what was expected to be a standard hospital birth became a story they will remember for the rest of their lives. Thanks to calm decision-making and the coordinated response of first responders, both mother and baby remained healthy after an extraordinary arrival.
