New Jersey Child Powerlifter Breaks Records With Remarkable Strength at Just Nine Years Old
Nine-year-old Michael McCourt Jr. from Sparta, New Jersey, is gaining attention across the U.S. sports community after delivering an extraordinary performance in competitive powerlifting and setting new records for his age group. At an age when most children are focused mainly on school and recreational sports, Michael has already stepped into the demanding world of strength training and is achieving results that many experienced athletes strive for.
Michael first competed in the USA Powerlifting Warwick Barbell Bash II event when he was eight years old, where he stood out as the youngest participant. Despite his age, he approached the competition with confidence and calmness, focusing simply on executing his lifts rather than feeling pressure from the environment or older competitors.
His performance at the event was impressive by any standard. Weighing around 110 pounds, Michael successfully completed a 209.44-pound deadlift, a 110.2-pound squat, and an 82.6-pound bench press. These lifts not only highlighted his natural strength but also placed him in record-setting territory for his age category, earning recognition at both state and world levels within youth divisions.
Behind his progress is a structured and disciplined training routine. Michael trains regularly with his father, Michael McCourt Sr., who also serves as his coach. Their sessions take place around four times a week, even on school nights, often late in the evening. According to his father, Michael’s dedication stands out because he remains focused and committed regardless of fatigue or schedule pressure.
His motivation for strength training began after watching professional strongmen and fitness influencers online, including names like Larry Wheels, Eddie Hall, and Brian Shaw. Inspired by their performances, he developed an interest in lifting weights and gradually turned that curiosity into consistent practice. Over time, what started as admiration for strength athletes evolved into a personal goal of becoming stronger himself.
Family support has played an important role in his journey. His mother described the emotional experience of watching him compete, noting his confidence and natural comfort in the sport. She shared that while Michael has always enjoyed sports, powerlifting appears to be where he feels most connected and focused.
At school, Michael’s achievements were warmly received by classmates and staff. After returning to Mohawk Avenue School in Sparta following his competition, he was greeted with excitement, applause, and recognition during a school announcement celebrating his success. The response reflected not only his athletic achievement but also the pride of his local community.
Michael’s journey in powerlifting is still in its early stages. His family has already begun investing in better training equipment to support his continued development. For his birthday, he even requested a powerlifting belt, showing how deeply committed he is to improving his performance.
According to his father, Michael has always shown a strong desire to achieve something meaningful and even express a wish to set records from a very young age. While he did not initially know what form that goal would take, powerlifting has now become the path where he is turning that ambition into reality.
As he continues to grow both physically and in experience, Michael McCourt Jr. is already emerging as one of the most remarkable young talents in youth strength sports, with a future that many will be watching closely.
