Limited ICE Facility Access Raises New Concerns After Governor Sherrill’s Newark Inspection Visit
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill was finally granted access to the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility in Newark after weeks of denied entry, but her visit has intensified concerns rather than resolving them.
On Monday morning, officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security allowed the governor to tour the facility. However, the visit came with strict limitations. She was not permitted to speak with or interact directly with any detainees held inside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) center, raising questions about transparency and oversight within the facility.
Governor Sherrill described the visit as highly controlled, stating that while she was allowed inside after repeated attempts, the conditions placed on her inspection made it difficult to fully understand what is happening behind the walls of the detention center. She emphasized that not being allowed to communicate with detainees leaves serious gaps in assessing their treatment and living conditions.
The governor also indicated that she intends to continue pressing federal authorities to allow a full inspection by New Jersey’s Department of Health, arguing that independent review is necessary to ensure humane treatment of individuals held at the facility. She further expressed concern about the broader operation of the center and reiterated her position advocating for improved conditions and potential closure of the facility.
In response, U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials defended the restrictions. The agency also emphasized that Delaney Hall is a federal facility, reinforcing that operational control remains under federal jurisdiction rather than state authority.
The situation comes shortly after Andy Kim, a U.S. Senator from New Jersey, conducted his own visit to the same facility. His inspection also faced limitations, with restricted access to detainees preventing him from independently verifying reports regarding medical care and living conditions. He noted that previous visits had allowed more direct communication with detainees, making the current restrictions more concerning from his perspective.
Delaney Hall has recently become the focus of ongoing protests and public debate. Immigration advocates and demonstrators have raised allegations regarding inadequate medical care and concerns about labor conditions within the facility. Tensions outside the center have also escalated in recent weeks, leading to multiple arrests during protests, including incidents involving property damage and blocked access points.
Despite these tensions, a peaceful vigil was held outside the facility over the weekend, where community and faith leaders gathered to pray for both detainees and those involved in the protests.
As scrutiny continues to build, both state officials and federal authorities remain at odds over access, transparency, and oversight of operations inside Delaney Hall.
