Former Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, who officially stepped away from coaching last year, reportedly addressed the team following San Antonio’s 123-108 defeat at home on Friday night. Players said the longtime franchise leader was unhappy with the team’s effort and made that clear during a private locker room meeting.
Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox revealed after Game 4 that Popovich’s emotional message had a major impact on the team. Fox explained that while Popovich remained around the organization throughout the season, this was the first time he directly confronted the players immediately after a game. After the win, Wembanyama downplayed the idea that the Spurs made major tactical changes. He explained that the Spurs simply responded with the level of effort and focus required in a high-pressure postseason environment.
On the other side, Oklahoma City struggled to recover after San Antonio’s aggressive start. Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander admitted after the game that the Spurs controlled the energy from the beginning. He noted that while Oklahoma City managed to recover from a similar slow start in the previous matchup, the team could not make the necessary adjustments in Game 4.
