GOP Senator John Kennedy Urges Focus on Economy Amid Trump–Pope Leo XIV Dispute

Senator John Kennedy, a Republican from Louisiana, has publicly taken a different stance from President Donald Trump regarding the ongoing tensions involving Pope Leo XIV, calling the dispute a distraction from more important national issues.
The controversy began after President Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who is Catholic, criticized Pope Leo XIV for his remarks opposing the United States’ military actions in Iran. Their comments have drawn criticism from political figures across party lines as well as from religious communities, with many calling the exchange unnecessary and divisive.
Speaking during an interview on Fox News’ program “The Big Weekend Show,” Senator Kennedy expressed concern that continued focus on disagreements with the Pope could hurt Republicans politically, especially ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
He made it clear that while he supports the administration’s broader policy direction, he disagrees with engaging in what he described as a “holy war” with the Pope. According to Kennedy, such disputes risk shifting attention away from key domestic concerns that matter most to American families.
Kennedy emphasized that voters are primarily focused on economic pressures, particularly the rising cost of living. He suggested that political leaders should prioritize discussing financial relief measures and economic achievements rather than engaging in public disputes with religious figures.
He also argued that the administration has stronger political ground when it highlights its economic policies, including proposed legislation aimed at tax relief for small businesses. In his view, communicating these efforts more effectively would better support Republican chances in the midterm elections.
During the interview, Kennedy also defended his respect for Catholicism while maintaining that religious leaders are entitled to their own opinions. He questioned the value of escalating tensions with the Pope, describing the situation as a distraction that gains unnecessary attention in the media cycle.
He further stated that the focus should remain on issues affecting everyday Americans, such as inflation and household expenses. According to Kennedy, leadership messaging should be centered on addressing these concerns rather than engaging in high-profile disputes that do not directly improve voters’ daily lives.
The senator concluded by urging a return to economic messaging, arguing that highlighting fiscal policies and cost-of-living measures would strengthen the party’s position heading into the midterms.
