George Santos Faces New Scrutiny After Clemency as Insider Trading Allegations Draw Federal Attention

Former New York Congressman George Santos is once again facing serious questions about his conduct, this time over allegations tied to activity on a prediction market platform that has reportedly attracted the attention of federal regulators.

According to multiple reports, Santos is under investigation by federal authorities over possible insider trading related to trades placed on Kalshi, an online prediction market where users can wager on the outcomes of real-world events. The matter has emerged only months after President Donald Trump granted clemency to the former Republican lawmaker, who had previously been serving a prison sentence for federal crimes.

The allegations center on events surrounding President Trump’s State of the Union address in February. Reports indicate that Santos publicly stated he would attend the speech and be present in the gallery. A day before the address, he posted a video on social media telling followers that he planned to be there.

However, Santos ultimately did not appear at the event. According to individuals familiar with the matter, traders on Kalshi were placing wagers on whether he would attend, and investigators are examining claims that Santos himself may have placed trades predicting his own absence while publicly suggesting he would be present.

Following the event, Santos explained his absence by stating that travel delays prevented him from attending. He later posted online that watching the speech from an airport television was not part of his original plans and blamed a delayed flight for missing the appearance.

The controversy gained additional attention after NPR technology correspondent Bobby Allyn reported on the allegations. According to Allyn, Santos contacted him after publication of the report and strongly disputed its accuracy. Santos reportedly argued that the story contained significant errors and claimed that his legal team had been unable to verify the existence of any investigation after contacting federal authorities.

During the conversation, tensions escalated. Allyn later wrote that Santos made a remark suggesting the story could result in “a gun in your face.” When asked to clarify the statement, Santos allegedly responded, “You know what I mean.”

Santos has since disputed that characterization. In a subsequent text message, he reportedly claimed that he never made such a threat and instead said the story would “blow up in your face.” He also criticized the reporter and rejected allegations that he had acted aggressively.

The former congressman later addressed the issue publicly on social media, insisting that he has dealt with hundreds of journalists throughout his career without threatening or intimidating anyone. Santos maintained that the investigation claims were unfounded and accused the reporter of creating a false narrative.

The fallout from the allegations has extended beyond federal scrutiny. Reports indicate that Polymarket, a rival prediction market platform, has ended its paid relationship with Santos amid the growing controversy.

Interestingly, Santos had previously discussed prediction markets on his podcast and acknowledged that the industry could face greater oversight in the future. During a March episode, he suggested that the sector was open to speculation and predicted that investigations and regulatory scrutiny would eventually follow. At the same time, he argued that participation in prediction markets should not automatically be viewed as criminal conduct.

The latest allegations add another chapter to the turbulent political and legal history of the former congressman. Santos previously served less than three months of a seven-year prison sentence after being convicted of wire fraud and identity theft before receiving clemency from President Trump in October.

At this stage, no formal charges related to the prediction market allegations have been announced. The reported federal review remains ongoing, and investigators have not publicly disclosed any conclusions. As authorities continue examining the matter, Santos once again finds himself at the center of a controversy that is drawing national attention.

For now, the case highlights the growing scrutiny surrounding prediction markets and the legal questions that can arise when public figures participate in events that may directly influence betting outcomes. Whether the current allegations lead to further action remains to be seen, but the investigation has already renewed public focus on one of the most controversial figures in recent American politics.
