Former Border Patrol Leader Signals Possible 2028 Presidential Campaign Centered on Immigration Enforcement

Former U.S. Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino has indicated that he is considering a possible run for president in 2028, a move that could bring one of the most outspoken supporters of strict immigration enforcement into the national political spotlight.

Bovino, who previously served as chief of the Border Patrol’s El Centro sector in California, confirmed reports that he is exploring a presidential bid after recent media coverage suggested he was weighing a campaign. His comments have quickly attracted attention because of his prominent role in immigration operations during President Donald Trump’s administration.

During his time in federal law enforcement, Bovino became widely known for overseeing immigration enforcement efforts and supporting aggressive border security measures. He retired from the Border Patrol in March after leading the El Centro sector since 2020.

In a public statement posted on social media, Bovino said his primary focus remains illegal immigration and deportation policies. He argued that public support for tougher immigration enforcement is stronger than many national surveys suggest. According to Bovino, the enthusiasm he has seen from supporters has encouraged him to keep all future political options open, including a potential presidential campaign.

Bovino stated that his goal is to address what he views as the country’s immigration challenges and to restore what he described as Americans’ quality of life. While he stopped short of formally announcing a campaign, his remarks made clear that he is actively considering whether a White House run could help advance those objectives.

The former Border Patrol chief also directed supporters to a website carrying the name “Bovino 2028,” further fueling speculation about his political ambitions. The website features promotional material tied to a possible future campaign and has already generated discussion online.

Bovino has remained an active voice in immigration debates since leaving government service. In recent months, he has frequently used social media to advocate for large-scale deportation efforts and to criticize what he believes are insufficient actions by government officials responsible for immigration policy.

His comments have often focused on border security, immigration enforcement, and federal responses to illegal immigration. Those views have helped him maintain visibility among supporters of stricter immigration policies while also drawing criticism from opponents who disagree with his approach.

Bovino also returned to national attention following demonstrations outside Delaney Hall in Newark, where Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and protesters were involved in tense confrontations. After those events, he publicly criticized the federal response and argued that stronger action should have been taken against demonstrators.

His role in previous immigration operations has also generated controversy. Enforcement actions connected to federal immigration efforts in several U.S. cities sparked criticism from civil rights advocates and protesters who questioned the tactics used by federal authorities. Supporters, however, have argued that such measures were necessary to enforce immigration laws and strengthen border security.

At this stage, Bovino has not formally entered the 2028 presidential race. However, his recent statements suggest he is seriously evaluating the possibility. Whether he ultimately launches a campaign remains uncertain, but his focus on immigration enforcement is already emerging as the central message of any potential political platform.

As national discussions about border security and immigration policy continue, Bovino’s next steps will likely be closely watched by both supporters and critics. For now, the former Border Patrol leader says his attention remains fixed on immigration enforcement while he considers whether a presidential run is the best path forward.
