Escaped Wallaby Sparks Search Operation in New Jersey Neighborhood

A young wallaby has triggered a local search effort in New Jersey after escaping from a zoo enclosure overnight, prompting authorities to alert nearby residents and urge caution.
According to officials, the 2-year-old male wallaby went missing from its enclosure at the Cape May County Park & Zoo. The escape was discovered shortly after it happened, leading to a coordinated response involving the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office, zoo staff, and Middle Township police.
Search teams have been focusing their efforts around the Sandcastle Drive area, where the animal is believed to be roaming. Authorities have made it clear that public safety is a top priority, advising residents not to approach the animal if spotted. Instead, they are being asked to immediately report any sightings by calling emergency services so trained personnel can safely handle the situation.
The zoo, located off Route 9 in the Cape May Court House section, is a well-known local attraction, making the incident particularly concerning for both officials and the community. While wallabies are generally not considered dangerous, they can become unpredictable if frightened or stressed, especially in unfamiliar surroundings.
This incident also highlights a recent pattern, as it marks the second wallaby escape reported in New Jersey in recent months. In a separate case late last year, another wallaby managed to break free from a farm enclosure in Gloucester County. That animal was later found and safely captured near a retail area in Monroe Township after being on the loose for about a day.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and remain actively engaged in locating the missing animal. Residents in the surrounding area are encouraged to stay alert and cooperate with law enforcement until the wallaby is safely returned.
