Eagles Counting on Jalyx Hunt to Build on Breakout Season in 2026

The Philadelphia Eagles are preparing for the start of training camp, and one of the biggest storylines heading into the 2026 NFL season is whether edge rusher Jalyx Hunt can continue the rapid rise that has already made him one of the team’s most important defensive players.

After a standout 2025 campaign, Hunt enters his third NFL season with much higher expectations than ever before. What began as a long-term development project has quickly turned into one of the Eagles’ biggest success stories. The organization now expects Hunt to play an even larger role as the defense looks to remain among the league’s best.

Hunt was selected by Philadelphia in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft after playing at Houston Christian. At the time, he was viewed as an athletic prospect with impressive physical tools but limited experience at his new position. Before becoming a defensive lineman, Hunt played safety at Cornell and did not switch to the defensive front until transferring to Houston Christian in 2022.

That unusual path has made his early NFL development even more impressive.

As a rookie, Hunt worked his way into the Eagles’ defensive rotation while contributing to a Super Bowl-winning roster. Instead of slowing down in his second season, he made a significant jump and established himself as one of the defense’s most productive players.

During the 2025 season, Hunt appeared in a major role and played 693 defensive snaps. He recorded 14 quarterback hits, nine tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, three interceptions, and two forced fumbles. His all-around production highlighted his ability to impact games in multiple ways, not just as a pass rusher but also in coverage and creating turnovers.

One of the most notable achievements from his breakout season was becoming the first player in Eagles history to lead the team in both sacks and interceptions during the same season. That rare accomplishment demonstrated the unique athletic ability that coaches and teammates have continued to praise.

Veteran edge rusher Jonathan Greenard, who joined Philadelphia after signing a $100 million contract following a trade, recently spoke highly of Hunt’s potential during offseason workouts. Greenard described Hunt as an exceptional athlete and suggested that his game still has significant room to grow because of how early he is in his development at the position.

Those comments reflect the confidence surrounding Hunt inside the Eagles organization.

Although Philadelphia added experienced pass rushers, including Greenard, Arnold Ebiketie, and A.J. Epenesa, the pressure will not rest entirely on Hunt. Nolan Smith is also expected to remain an important part of the defensive front as long as he stays healthy. Even with additional talent around him, Hunt is expected to continue playing a major role in the Eagles’ defensive plans.

The Eagles believe the combination of Hunt’s athleticism, versatility, and improving technique gives him the opportunity to become an even more complete defender in 2026. His ability to create pressure on quarterbacks while also making plays in coverage makes him a valuable piece of the defense.

Beyond this season, Hunt’s long-term future with Philadelphia could become another important storyline. His rookie contract runs through the end of the 2027 season. If he matches or exceeds last year’s performance, he could emerge as a strong candidate for a contract extension before reaching free agency.

For now, however, the Eagles’ focus remains on the upcoming season. Training camp will provide the first opportunity to see how Hunt builds on last year’s progress and whether he is ready to take another step forward.

After transforming from a raw prospect into one of Philadelphia’s most productive defenders in just two seasons, Hunt enters 2026 carrying greater expectations than ever before.
