Bridgewater Crash Claims Life of 91-Year-Old Veteran After Sudden Traffic Stop on Route 22
A 91-year-old Bridgewater resident and longtime U.S. Army veteran has died following a three-vehicle crash on Route 22 in Somerset County, according to local authorities. Investigators said the collision unfolded after a Tesla came to a complete stop in the center lane of the highway, creating a chain reaction that ended in tragedy.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 4:05 p.m. on May 31 along the eastbound lanes of Route 22 near Grove Street in Bridgewater. Police said traffic conditions changed suddenly when a Tesla stopped in the middle of the roadway. An SUV traveling behind the vehicle also came to a stop.
Authorities said Hugh F. Johnson Jr., 91, of Bridgewater, was driving a passenger vehicle that subsequently struck the stopped SUV. Following the impact, Johnson’s vehicle moved into the right lane before crossing back toward the center median. The car then collided with a tree and came to a stop.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported Johnson to a nearby hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, he later died from injuries sustained in the crash.
A 93-year-old woman who was traveling with Johnson was also injured in the incident. Police said she suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment.
The occupants of the SUV involved in the crash, including a 33-year-old man from Brooklyn, New York, and two passengers, were not injured.
Johnson’s death has deeply affected the local community. According to his obituary, he proudly served in the U.S. Army and spent many years working as a welder for American Airlines. Beyond his professional career, he was known for restoring antique automobiles and creating handcrafted furniture and clocks through his woodworking projects.
Family members remember Johnson as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, five children, 10 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
As of the latest update from investigators, no charges have been filed in connection with the crash. Authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and are working to determine all factors that contributed to the collision.
