Mother’s Day Violence in Paterson Leaves Two Dead and Four Injured as Police Search for Suspects
A Mother’s Day gathering in Paterson turned deadly Sunday night after gunfire erupted on a busy city street, leaving two men dead and four other people wounded, according to local authorities.
The shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of Rosa Parks Boulevard and Godwin Avenue, an area that quickly became crowded with police officers, emergency crews, and frightened residents after multiple shots were fired.
Officials said officers responding to the scene found six people suffering from gunshot wounds. Two victims, identified only as Paterson residents ages 43 and 29, were pronounced dead at the scene. Four additional victims, also residents of the city, were transported to a nearby hospital where they were reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities have not announced any arrests, and investigators continued searching Monday for one or more suspects connected to the shooting. Law enforcement officials have not yet released details about what may have led to the violence.
The investigation is being handled by the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office along with local police.
The shooting shocked many residents because it happened on Mother’s Day, a time when families across the city were spending time together and celebrating the holiday. Witnesses described moments of panic as gunfire echoed through the neighborhood.
Paterson City Councilman Alex Mendez said he was outside his office speaking with campaign volunteers when the shots were fired nearby. His office is located roughly a block from where the shooting occurred.
According to Mendez, people immediately rushed for safety after hearing the gunfire. He described the atmosphere as chaotic and said many residents were terrified during the incident.
Videos shared online appeared to show a large emergency response with victims lying in the street while officers secured the area with police tape. The scene remained active for hours as investigators gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses.
Community concerns over public safety have again come into focus following the deadly violence. Residents in the area expressed fear and frustration after another major shooting incident struck the city.
Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the shooting to contact investigators as the search for those responsible continues. Officials have not confirmed how many shooters may have been involved.
