Early Morning Blaze Engulfs Newark Block, Leaves Multiple Families Displaced and Firefighters Injured

A fast-moving three-alarm fire tore through a residential block on Jefferson Street late Friday night, causing significant damage to multiple buildings, injuring several firefighters, and forcing dozens of residents out of their homes in Newark, according to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda.
Emergency teams were first dispatched to the scene at 196 Jefferson Street at around 10:27 p.m. on Friday after reports of a structure fire. What initially began as a single-building fire quickly escalated as flames intensified and spread across nearby properties. Authorities confirmed that the situation was raised to a third alarm at approximately 1:05 a.m. Saturday to bring in additional manpower and resources.
Fire officials reported that more than 100 firefighters from Newark were involved in the extensive overnight operation. Crews worked for several hours in challenging conditions as the fire spread through a row of connected buildings. The blaze extended from the original point at 196 Jefferson Street and moved through adjacent structures located at 194, 192, 190, and 188 Jefferson Street.
During the firefighting efforts, six firefighters were injured while responding to the emergency. The extent of their injuries has not been fully detailed, but officials confirmed they were hurt while actively working to control the rapidly spreading fire.
After hours of continuous effort, firefighters were able to bring the situation under control by 3:24 a.m. on Saturday. Authorities stated that quick coordination among emergency crews played a key role in preventing further spread to nearby areas.
The fire left dozens of residents displaced as several buildings sustained heavy damage. Emergency response teams are now working with local support services to assist affected families with temporary shelter and basic needs.
Officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the fire. An investigation is currently underway to determine how the blaze started and how it spread so quickly through the block.
City authorities are expected to continue assessing the structural damage in the coming days as residents begin the process of recovery and relocation.
