Teen Driver Rejects 20-Year Prison Plea in Fatal New Jersey Highway Crash Case
A serious crash case in New Jersey has taken a new turn after an 18-year-old driver chose not to accept a plea deal that would have sent him to prison for two decades. The case centers on a fatal incident that occurred earlier this year on Route 1, resulting in the death of a teenage passenger and a dog, while leaving several others injured.
According to officials from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, the driver, Mikael Salman, was offered a plea agreement that included a 20-year state prison sentence. The deal required him to plead guilty to multiple charges, including aggravated manslaughter, eluding law enforcement, and animal cruelty. Under the terms of the agreement, he would have been required to serve 85 percent of the sentence, which equals approximately 17 years behind bars. However, Salman declined the offer, meaning the case will now continue through the legal system.
The crash took place shortly before midnight on February 19, when authorities say Salman was driving southbound on Route 1 at a high speed. Police in Woodbridge attempted to stop the vehicle, but the situation escalated quickly. Within about a minute of the attempted traffic stop, Salman’s car collided with another vehicle near the intersection of Gill Lane.
The impact of the crash was severe. A 17-year-old passenger in Salman’s car, later identified as Karla M. Gamero of Edison, was pronounced dead just after midnight on February 20. A dog traveling in the same vehicle also did not survive the crash. The tragic loss has drawn attention to the risks associated with high-speed driving and attempts to evade law enforcement.
Emergency responders rushed multiple injured individuals from both vehicles to Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center. Authorities confirmed that the injuries were serious, although the exact number of people hurt has not been disclosed. It was also clarified that the police vehicle involved in the initial attempt to stop Salman was not directly part of the collision.
Salman himself suffered injuries in the crash and has remained hospitalized, according to earlier statements from his attorney, Jason Seidman. Legal proceedings are still ongoing, and the case is expected to move forward to a grand jury. This step will determine whether formal charges will proceed to trial.
