Airlines Increase Checked Bag Fees as Travel Costs Rise in 2026

Air travelers across the United States are now facing higher costs at the airport, as major carriers United Airlines and JetBlue have officially raised their checked baggage fees. The move comes at a time when airline operating expenses are climbing, largely driven by a sharp increase in jet fuel prices, which have nearly doubled since the beginning of the year.

Starting April 3, United Airlines has implemented a noticeable increase in fees for checked baggage on flights across the United States, as well as routes to Mexico, Canada, and Latin America. This marks the airline’s first baggage fee adjustment in two years, signaling a shift as cost pressures continue to build within the aviation industry.

Under the new pricing structure, passengers who choose to prepay for their checked luggage will now pay $45 for the first bag, up from $35, and $55 for the second bag, previously $45. Travelers carrying three or more bags will see a larger jump, with fees increasing from $150 to $200. For those who delay payment until closer to departure, the cost rises further. Customers paying within 24 hours of travel will now be charged $50 for the first bag and $60 for the second, both reflecting a $10 increase. The fee for additional bags in this category has also increased to $200.

United continues to encourage early payment by offering a small discount. Customers who pay for their bags online at least 24 hours before departure can still save $5 per bag in most markets. At the same time, certain groups remain exempt from these added costs. Frequent flyers enrolled in MileagePlus, Premier members, active-duty military personnel, and passengers traveling in premium cabins will continue to receive free checked baggage allowances.

JetBlue introduced similar changes earlier in the week, adjusting its baggage fees based on ticket type and travel routes. While the exact pricing varies, the airline has confirmed that fees have increased overall, particularly for international and transatlantic flights. However, loyalty program members under TrueBlue Mosaic status will continue to receive baggage benefits. Mosaic 1 members are still entitled to one free checked bag, while Mosaic levels 2 through 4 can check up to two bags at no cost.

Like United, JetBlue is also promoting early check-in savings. Passengers who add checked bags at least 24 hours before departure can receive a $10 discount per bag on the first two checked items. Additionally, both airlines continue to offer free checked baggage for customers who hold eligible airline-branded credit cards, providing some relief for frequent travelers.

The timing of these fee increases reflects broader challenges in the airline industry. With jet fuel prices averaging around $4.88 per gallon in the United States, airlines are adjusting pricing strategies to offset rising operational costs. For passengers, this means planning ahead is becoming more important than ever, especially when it comes to managing travel expenses.

As summer travel demand builds, these changes are expected to impact millions of travelers. While airlines maintain that the adjustments are necessary, passengers are now being encouraged to review baggage policies carefully before booking tickets to avoid unexpected costs at the airport.
