Emergency Crews Revive Cyclist After Hit-and-Run Crash in Maplewood, New Jersey

On Wednesday night in Maplewood, New Jersey, a cycling and SUV incident provoked a quick emergency response. The rider was stabilized swiftly by firefighters and medical responders following the Parker Avenue collision, according to authorities.
South Essex Fire Department officials said emergency medical services were called to 221 Parker Avenue at 7:04 p.m. to report a person struck by a vehicle. Firefighters also helped.
The biker was unresponsive in the road when responders arrived minutes later. Officials said the person had respiratory difficulties and severe injuries. The situation was dire when dispatch received word that the person may have been in cardiac arrest.
A white BMW-style SUV eastbound on Parker Avenue hit the bicycle, witnesses told police. The car continued westbound toward Fernwood Road without stopping. Officials did not immediately identify the cyclist or driver.
Engine 34 firefighters from the South Essex Fire Department provided emergency care at the scene with Maplewood Police Department officers and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital paramedics. They collaborated to stabilize the injured rider before transport.
The rider was brought to University Hospital’s trauma unit for advanced care. Authorities have not updated the victim’s condition.
Fire authorities said the incident was managed well due to the quick arrival of various rescue units and great agency communication. The professionalism of firefighters, police, and paramedics helped officials describe an urgent on-scene operation as successful.
